"Free" E.R. room tools

Got stitches the other day (8-10, not bad by my history). Anyway, when they were finished, the nurse started throwing away the items they used, including hymostats, tweezers and something else in the bio-hazard box. I asked her if she was throwing those away and she said yes. Said I could have had them if I wanted. Not suggesting some Rambo sew yourself up BS but they'd have come in handy to pull splinters or any of you guys who know the stuff, clamped of an artery. Woulda helped me if it had been a little deeper, Doc said I missed some arteries by a few M.M. Anyway, I know I paid a pretty penny for them to be thrown out. Disregarded the first rule of knives, cut away from yourself. One of Evan's knives that was so sharp, I thought I had just nicked myself until I saw the blood. So sharp I didn't even feel about a 2 " cut. Anyway, get tools they are throwing out, you paid for them.

When I was going through my EMT class, I had to do clinicals in the ER. They were throwing away stuff that had never been used. I'm talking stuff still in the wrapper. I loaded up on a coupe of items. They have "kits" for individual patients, and when they're done with the patient, the kit goes bye-bye!

I asked about that the last time I got stitched up. Doc told me it was cheaper to get new stuff then to clean, sterilize and repackage the used stuff. Don't make sense to me either.

same thing with me, i had three stitches in my arm from a dumb @$$ that broke a mirror and it fell and hit me without warning, so i got to the ER and get my stitches, when the doc was done he tried to throw away the needles, thread, scissors and a few other things, i stopped him and told him i wanted to keep them, he said "its got blood on them" i replied with "its my blood, ill keep it and the tools its on", he laughed and tole me he could let me take them but he would let me "throw them away", so he left i walked out with two pockets full of tools, still have the blood stain in my coat pocket. cleaned the crap out of the tools and now have them in a med kit i put together.

HEY!!! I resent that Sid! ;)

A couple years back, before I had custody of my youngest, we were at the gun show, and he was just starting to enjoy them, so I was not about to leave the show and spend 5 hours of our weekend at the ER. I cut my hand removing a thick zip tie for a bud and I happened to have an old suture kit in the car...anyway...my 11 year old {at that time} thought it was cool {he took the pic with his phone}...always wondered if I could get stitched without anesthetic...not as bad as I thought. And he had a story to tell at school :)

Of course I checked with a doc during the week.

And I too ask for any goodies after a visit to the doc.

Ever used an autoclave? I used to volunteer at a vets office in high school(senior project stuff, around 30 hours or so total), and one of the things I learned how to do was sterilize tools...not fun stuff. It all has to be wrapped a certain way, then wrapped again, then taped, then you've gotta wait for the tools to sterilize, then make sure you don't touch anything with a bare hand after they've been sterilized or you start the process all over. Not a lot of fun. Not something you go through that much studying to do, and not something you want to trust a minimum wager with either...

Still really wasteful...but having a small amount of personal experience doing it, I can say that I understand why.

Sid hope you get to doing better. Be careful round them sharp objects. Nice to know I have a friend who is an ER nurse, I don't want the blood soaked items, but the ones in the wrapper are good to go. Them hemostats also make great hook removers and split shot crimpers when ya are fishin!!

Re: "Free" E.R. room tools

Thanks Encore. Happened about midnight, I wrapped it to keep it closed. When we got there, they said at 7 A.M. I waited too long so the next person to ask me, I remembered it happened at 3 A.M. Doc came in and asked me if I wanted pain meds or stitches. Well duh, I waited til the next day so f' the pain pills, puts some cat gut in there and I'm gone. He gave me some pills anyway, there still back there. Cut the stitches out myself and put on my dancing shoes.
