We are still doing the low carb thing but the kids have to eat. So, I made my not so famous french toast this morning.

    Ingredients:
fresh eggs (store bought just ain’t as good)
    Cinnamon
    Vanilla
    Salted butter
    Cayenne Pepper*

Mix everything (I just put it in until it looks right), but the butter, in the bowl. Dip the toast and put it on the griddle, that was just greased with the butter.

*I once accidentally added cayenne pepper, in place of cinnamon, and rather than throw it out I cracked a couple of more eggs and added a good bit of cinnamon. Everyone just went on and on about it. So, the Cayenne Pepper became my special ingredient.

Not all “as seen on tv” stuff is junk. These things are awesome for making French toast.

A pizza cutter is great for cutting up French toast and pancakes for the knuckleheads.

Back in 1964 when I was a freshman at USM, the commons or school cafeteria was horrendous to say the least but there was a place just across Hardy street that made
the best French toast I ever ate, before or since but
I forget the name although I suspect its long gone by
now, yours looks like a great substitute with some
very crisp bacon and or decent sausage, link or patty.

It’s even better when you use sour dough bread.

My wife and I had bacon and fried eggs.

:lol6:I bet with some genuine sourdough that would be a
religious experience or as an old friend defined it,
"his girlfriend who spent much of the time saying
    OH GOD!!!!!!!"

Try it with a baguette. Slice it on the diagonal the night before and let it set out to get stale. It will soften back up again when you soak it with the egg.

  9. My first thought was "Is there a disaster?" since that seems to be when most people buy the makings for French toast.:)

Am I the only one who add a dollop of milk to the egg mixture? I also save bacon drippings (flavored lard) to grease the griddle instead of butter. I think I'm addicted to cinnamon since I add a lot of it to pancake and waffle batter, as well as french toast and cinnamon toast (duh). In fact, I had blueberry/pecan/cinnamon pancakes this morning, but I'm looking forward to french toast tomorrow after reading your post.

    Please, lets get serious .
    Grand Slam:
2 lg Irish loaf bread slices (inch thick) batter in French batter.
Cook one side: flip- as soon as flipping, cut donut size hole big enough to crack egg into. Cook.
Place slices of Bacon on top of 1st Toast/ cover with 2nd Toast.
Drizzle with a Peanut Butter sauce & Serve.
Used to fix for Katrina youth volunteers. :).

The low carb diet, Dr Adkins Diet, etc is a easy way to lose weight and have energy if you can stay away from bread and sweets and starches. I tried to limit my bread to 1 or two slices a day and I would take a break on Sundays. I would still eat an occasional baked potato and still lose weight. My weakness is sweets. I would eat a salad and hamburger patties, a favorite low carb meal..
