i was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday before lunch. he has a 444 marlin that he just can not get dialed in. we got to talking about his optics and mounts, which were bushnell trophy and see thru rings. i told him he needed some good mounts and, in my opinion, better optics than the trophy scope. i suggested the prostaff, as it is inexpensive and i have been very pleased with all of the ones I have owned (3 now). he said to find him one and he wanted to get it put on. he was tired of missing deer. i called every shop in town and couldnt find one. about that time my mom called me.
i ordered a 3-9x40 prostaff for my marlin 338 mx about a week ago. it came in yesterday. i told my buddy he could buy me another one when we find one and id give him that one. i also told him i would take it to my house, take my game reaper one piece mount off my 338 and mount on his 444 and go sight it in for him if he would reimburse me for all the parts and range time. he agreed, so i took a half day and went and did what i told him id do. Since surplus city only has a 50 yard range i sighted it in about 1.5" high and was done. i had also told him i was gonna "go kill me a deer with his gun just to show you it can be done with the nikon and game reaper"...
i was halfway kidding. it is hot yesterday and i honestly didnt think i was gonna see anything much less get a shot at something like this. about 4:30 i saw one slipping through the woods but couldnt see it good enough to tell what it was. and i didnt even think it was gonna come out on the food plot i was hunting over. but about 15 minutes later it did, and it gave me a perfect, still, broadside shot at about 65 yards. Punched out both lungs. He ran about 45 yards and laid down. i was totally surprised this happened. it is the biggest deer i have ever killed and it was killed with a friends rifle. it is also my first levergun kill, also with a friends rifle. haha
