I bought a “Glock Autopistol” magazine at the grocery store the other day and the entire magazine was about the new Gen 4 pistols. I have only read this magazine and saw a few videos on Youtube about them, but I have not actually touched one in person yet. I bought a Glock 26 a few weeks ago for my CCW and I like it so far. So I was wondering what all of you thought about the Gen 4’s and if it was worth trying to possibly trade the Glock I have now for one of the Gen 4’s? The only thing that really stands out to me on the new Gen 4’s is the ability to switch the magazine release around. I am a right handed shooter, but I have medium sized hands. In order for me to get to the magazine release on the Glock with my thumb I actually have to turn the gun in my hand a little, press the release, and then turn the gun back to the correct position. However if I was able to switch the magazine release around I could just hit it with my middle finger and it would make things easier for me. My Ruger P95 has a ambidextrous magazine release and I just hit the release with my middle finger instead of my thumb to drop the mag. However I don’t want to spend the money just to be able to switch the magazine release around unless there are other good reasons to have a Gen 4 over the Glock I already own.

Just wanted to get yalls input. Thanks and be safe.

The Gen 4 is NOT reliable. I know for sure they have issues.
What kind of issues are they having? I know one video I watched about them said that because they made the magazine release bigger that it poses an issue with concealed carry because people complained when they put it in a IWB holster sometimes the mag would pop out. I don’t know if this is true or not.

The Gen 4 is in it's infant stage. It hasn't been adopted by military or law enforcement which means that the Gen 3 is still top dog. Most Gen 3 and Gen 4 parts are NOT interchangeable. It will be much easier to repair and upgrade Gen 3 Glocks. The parts are more readily available due to the Gen 3's popularity. If you're having an issue with your mag catch I'd suggest looking around for an aftermarket extended catch. This could solve your problems.

BTW, the mag catch in the Gen 3 is very simple to change. The ambi catch in the Gen 4 in a God awful nightmare.

What I am doing is staying with my 3rd Gens and stocking a few replacement parts for them. I am also expecting another package in the mail today with five more 17rd mags.

I honestly can't see myself ever purchasing a Gen 4 and feeling 100% comfortable with it's reliability like I do with my Gen 3s.

Sadly, I feel Glock dropped the ball on this & fixed an issue that wasn't a problem.

They are trying to appeal to the LEO market. Some departments ask for features like interchangeable back straps and ambi controls. They are looking for a one size fits all hand gun. Unfortunately in order to create such a weapon Glock has started over engineering. When the simplicity is gone then so is the usefulness of the Glock in my opinion.

I also agree that the Gen 3 is the way to go.

Stick with Gen3. Gen4 problem arises from the recoil spring assembly IMO. Problem can be solved by buying a "special" washer that enables one too use the OEM recoil spring assembly from the Gen3.
There are millions of Gen3's out there that work just fine. Millions being the keyword here. If it ain't broke, why fix it. Just to add a little to CalebC's statements.

The issue is with the 9mm 17 they placed the new recoil spring system from the glock 22 and the spring is heavier to handle .40 so with some lighter loads in 9mm it is causing ftf and fte. They relizied the problem and fixed it so if you get one made after Jan you should be ok.

Just my $.02 the 4th gen feels awsome and if I get another glock it will be a 4th gen.

Realistically, most people will have to flip the gun in their hand to make a reload. If you practice, it'll get easy and you'll be able to do it easily. For example, watch this guy in the video. He does it again several times in slow motion and you can visibly see him flip the gun and flip it back. He's extremely fast, but the basic concept is easy to pick up on.

The gen 4 is not reliable is not an accurate statement, the gen 4 glock is still as reliable as all the other semi auto handguns out there  . They are just not quite as reliable as the earlier models which are just 100% reliable, i think a lot of the problems with the gen 4s are the recoil springs, I would throw the factory guide rod/spring in the trash if you get a gen 4. I have a lot of Glocks, don't own a Gen 4 but wouldn't have a problem buying one at all.

I agree.....if I couldn't find a Gen2 or Gen3, I would buy a Gen4.

seems like i always get advice after i buy something.in this case it is the glock 19 9mm.i am told now that a 40(23) has less recoil because it is a slower bullet.any truth to all the critics?
I think you can discount the critics as being fairly full of it. While I do think the .40 is a more formidable round, I don't care much for shooting it at the range. I find the recoil in every one I've shot to be fairly harsh. I'd much rather shoot a .45 all afternoon. I don't find the Glock 9s to be harsh at all. I think 1000 rounds in an afternoon would be a cake walk, whereas, I'd probably put the .40 down after a hundred rounds or so. However, I am somewhat recoil sensitive and tend to shoot for enjoyment, rather than to prove anything to myself or anyone else. If my wrist hurts the next day, I figure I'm shooting the wrong gun for me.

I have owned every generation of Glock. The gen 4 model 17..is the most accurate Glock I have ever owned. It fits my hand better than all others. My experience has been very positive ..YMMV.

Mine has never jammed..just like all the other Glocks I ever owned.
