This is probably the round that should have been developed instead of screwing around with the .222 round. Stoner designed his gun to shoot the 7.62 x 51mm/.308 anyway. He was asked to scale it down, but to 5.56? The 6.8 will be a perfect balance of ballistics. Long range, more power and easy to hit your target. Bravo!

A 6.8 Contender carbine is my favorite deer stand rifle. I also use a 6.8 Contender handgun. Hits like a 300 Savage, recoil like a .243; what's not to like?! My grandson also likes his Contender in 6.8.. He has been hunting with it since he was 6...he is now 13...and has killed 15-20 deer with it.

Military won’t choose the 6.8spc as they are looking for a more powerful round. The 6.8spc specii would be a good choice but that ship seems to have sailed. They have chosen the 6.8 bore dia for the new round though.

I have built 3-4times more 6.8ars for folks than 556. It’s a great round for hunting and defense but plinking isn’t as cheap as 556 or 7.62x39mm.

^^^^Some sort of telescoping round.^^^^
Maybe a sabot or accelerator like the old .30-06.
Hey Wingmaster. Which would you rather carry a basic load of 5.56mmx45mm (.224) (about 25lbs.) or 6.8mm x ? (unknown weight, but heavier for sure),in 98degrees 95% jungle humidity? or 105degree heat in the desert???

190gr per round for 556
260gr per round for 6.8
392gr for 7.62x51

The difference in the Army standard of 210rds of ammo being 5.7lbs for 210rds of 556 vs 7.8lbs for 210rds of 6.8. I'd carry the weight difference since the 6.8 SPC delivers 44% more power than the 5.56 on average. It’s also a better performer from short barrels so you can cut weight there.

Short barreled with spec 2 ammo is where the 6.8 really shines. With 90 grain projectile and a hot load with a 16” barrel you see velocities similar to hornady’s 129 gr 6.5 creedmoor (I assume velocity measured with a 20” barrel). With a 12.5” barrel you only lose a few hundred FPS.
The AR-15 platform is so much lighter than the AR-10 also, I always recommend 6.8 to people looking for a new hunting round.
It would be nice if SPC 2 would get SAAMI registered.

I’m considering a 6.8 pistol but barrels are not really plentiful for that. I’ll look more next week.
AR pistol? as @Redlick83 (Edit: and also @rigrat ) said AR 15 performance barrels are top notch, he has both 10.5' and 12.5"
I have a 12.5" on my SBR and I love it, I also had a 16" that I just sold that was awesome as well, just not as compact as I wanted with a suppressor.

All this talk of the 6.8 reminded me I hadn't taken it out of the safe this season. Been using my father-in-law's Winchestesr Model 100 carbine made in 1965 in .308 he left me when he passed years ago to kill my biggest buck to date late last year plus a smaller buck and a couple of does.
Remembering the satisfaction of shooting deer with a single shot I have been using my "primitive weapon" Contender 44Mag. No luck yet this year, passed on small bucks and does.
tonight I got out the original 6.8 mm REM barrel I bought several years ago after giving the first one to my grandson. I know the scope is on, I shot it to check last week. Gonna shoot some hornady 120gr SST's and try and drop a nice 11 point that has been eluding us. Change guns, change your luck, right?
