I used to do a lot of it 20 years ago, some of my equipment is trashed so I will have to update some, Just cleaned out a large area in my shop to build the benches so I can set back up. What is the best scale that everyone is using nowadays?

Do you plan to load pistol or rifle ammo? Or both? For pistol ammo I use a RCBS beam scale and throw the powder with a RCBS little dandy powder measurer, for rifle cartridges I use a Pact electronic dispenser and scale. Some of the electronic measurers have trouble with small weight loads like those for pistols and the manual throwers don't meter extruded powders very well that I normally load for rifles.

I don't do a lot of pistol loads but if I did I would definately look at the Dillon. Haven't heard of anyone not likeing them. There are several Dillon users on hear I'm sure one of them will reply soon.

I use a Lyman Electronic scale. It will give you good numbers down to a tenth of a grain. A good set of balance beam scales are hard to beat though. If you are going to use electronic scales - BUY A GOOD SET. A good set of digital scales can be had for around $150.00. The cheaper ones will work, but not every time and it only takes once. A good set of balance beams can be had for about $50.00. Most digital scales like stability, no vibration, no movement of any kind and can be subject to errors with temperature changes. This said, I find them to be faster and easy to read. Just keep them to theirself, calibrate often and they will be fine. I cross reference every 8th - 10th load with the ole trusty Balance Beams just to keep em honest and make sure all is on track. Some really good scales can be had at midwayusa.com and at your door in a couple of days, for a fair price.

For scales, I have a RCBS 5-0-2 scale that i use for loading rifle and checking the powder measure on the Dillon 550. If I had the money, I would get a chargemaster for rifle. I have had a Lee Classic Cast Turret press and really liked it, but I am reloading for 3 USPSA shooters, so the Lee couldn't keep up with the demand. The only complaint I have on the 550 is the priming system. i prefered the Lee system, but I understand that system wouldn't work on a progressive.

I load rifle on (30-06) on a single stage Lee press, since I don't need to make a lot at one sitting. Another reason is my 10 year old son likes to reload for the rifle (He is the primary shooter of that rifle) and him loading on the single stage helps him to learn the process better.

I was using an RCBS chargemaster 750 -- the small electronic. Used it for two years and really loved it, but it crapped out on me a few weeks ago with no warning. Only a one year warranty so I tossed it in the garbage and bought the RCBS 1010 balance beam type and wow, I really love it. I can't believe how well the magnetic dampening system works for quickly stopping the swinging pointer. With some practice I'm almost as fast now as I was using the 750, but since I don't have to recalibrate it all the time, I think it's pretty much the same speed.
