A couple of my suggestions aren't as popular as others, but I trust my life to them every day:

My FNP 45 stays at my bedside every night. Easy shooting, very reliable, and 16 rds of 45 acp in my hand pointing at you if you are coming down my hall!

My edc is A Taurus Millenium Pro PT 145. Very concealable, ultra reliable, accurate, and 11 rds of 45 acp in a gun I can nearly hide behind my hand.

I'd vote for the 1911. Get a 4 1/2 inch or a 5" and then later grab a 3" if you like shooting them. You've GOT to have that SA trigger in your arsenal!
