Gun of the week

I figured instead of a bunch of pictures at once, I'd leave you guys in some suspense. This week we have the most valuable and closest to my heart weapon I own - and she's all original:

Dang, did you steal that from Josey Wales?
Not quite, but some day I will be passed down the other half of this pair so I can pretend to be him

Okay, showing my ignorance here I'm sure, but where's the rear sight?
You would never know if you hadn't seen one before, it's in the hammer and is only visible when cocked.

That looks like an 1851. What caliber is it? BTW Josey Wales carried the 1847 Colt Walker. Although the frame is the same as the one above, it's much larger than this one, and the loading handle on this one has a lock, while the Walker did not.

.36 caliber, manufactured in 1863. My grandfather said it was one of 500 purchased by Nathan Bedford Forest to outfit his cavalry but I have nothing to prove or disprove it. Makes for a fun story though :)

I know that Forrest enlisted as an inlisted man. When he bought weapons for his unit, they made him an officer (imagine that). Anyway, it'd worth it to verify that. I understand it's a family heirloom and not for sale but if it was bought by Maj. Gen. Forrest, it'd be priceless and should be insured as such.

I have looked into it some but from my understanding the sale was extremely hush hush as he had them smuggled into Kentucky. Due to this I doubt there is a record of recorded serial numbers of the firearms he actually purchased. If you have any recommendations to help me prove or disprove this story I would love to look into it further.

I don't but there are several guys on the forum and internet that could. Don't let that gun out of your possession until you know of it's origin. Hope it is. There's a guy in Coloroda that checked out a teacher/friend who verified a Confederate penny for him. Good luck my friend.
