I recently bought a new Rem 597 "Yellow Jacket" that looked like it was meant to shoot. Well, I was wrong. I took it out the 1st time with only my favorite 22 LR's, the Wolf Match Target, thinking they shoot in anything. Well, I was wrong again. I got average of 3" to 4" groups at 50 yds. Went home, scrubbed the bore good, polished it a bit with 800 grit and thought I'd give it another chance with different ammo. Took it out again last Wednesday and carried 10 boxes of different ammo, Win, Fed, Rem & Eley. It shot nothing well, still averaging about 3"-4" groups. The scope & mounts are solid. I don't have a bore scope but using a white bore light it appears that the rifling is very shallow, so shallow I can hardly see it. This is my only Remington 22. Is this normal for Remingtons? Anybody got experience with Rem 22's especially the 597? I wanted to get some feedback from others before calling Remington.

U polished a new bore with 800 grit?

:wallbash:

22's take a bit longer to break in than centerfires...I'd say maybe not "broken in" till at least a brick maybe....

I'm not sure what you expect out of a semi-auto 22 lr anyway

Find someone who shoots better than you do...have them shoot it some and see how it groups

and there are about a million varieties of 22 ammo...keep trying them out

U did not mention what scope you have on it...Is it a centerfire or rimfire scope...wal-mart special POS...or something better?

rimfire scopes have parallax set at 60 yards...,most centerfires are 100 and 150 yards...it matters...

I have a Rem 597 VTR it will shoot 1" or less at 50yrds if you do your part. Never shot the Yellow Jacket but from the picture it looks like has the same bull barrel as the VTR. Check this thread on rimfire central, his Yellow Jacket shoots 1" or less. http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363035
You might be on to something about the rifling, Remington has had more than a few quailty problems with the 597s.

Yep 800 grit. Figured about 5 passes couldn't hurt especially since the bore felt very rough & gritty while cleaning it. I shot a total of about 100 rds and it was no better from the 1st to the last. I expect better than 3" groups out of anything at 50 yds with a 32X scope. I know you can't tell from there but I'm no expert but I don't consider myself novice either. I've only been shooting about 52 years.

I think if I were to call Remington....I'd purposely "forget" to mention the part about the 800 grit sandpaper..

They make something called bore paste....

The purpose of "break-in" is to smooth what few tooling marks may be left in a barrel. I suppose a 22 LR might take a little longer due to slower bullet speeds

Good Luck with Remington on the phone...Keep shooting it...get couple different folks to shoot it and see if the groups change....

There's tons of 22 ammo out there...keep trying different brands....a lot of us are finding that wolf match extra shoots a lot better than wolf match in our Kimber 82G's...who knows

but if I were a bettin man...I'd bet there aint nothing wrong with your gun

 no no no, not sandpaper. 800 grit bore lapping compound. Think I'll call Remington tomorrow.

Ok...I feel better now....Good luck with Remington....I think a few on here had issues with 870 shotgun finishes...not sure they got the answer they wanted

If you have a decent smith in your location...I might let him have a look...your profile does not show your location so its hard to recommend one

BTW...
