Lets talk High end 1911's for a spell...when I say High end I mean guns that start in the 2K plus range.

makers that come to mind are Les Baer, (one of my fav's, but don't own one yet) Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom.

Of course they all have many different models....

I've always lusted after a really really nice 1911 but have not thrown down for one...So who's got one, had one etc....

are they worth the $ or is it just style points and marketing hype....

I know we got at least one Les Baer owner on here...feel free to discuss any other high end makers I left out....lets keep it to 1911 guns that we know are 2K and up

I own an Ed Brown Kobra Carry with the Gen III coating on her:

I'd call Baer, Brown, Wilson, and Nighthawk a "semi-custom" build, as they're all a mini production setup. True customs are much more and assembled, as stated above, by the individual gun and part.

I can directly address the Kimber vs custom question, since I had (have) Kimber(s). My experience with Kimber has been excellent, I should point out. I've not had any jammomatics, etc., all have worked as advertised. The alloy framed guns kick more and thus are slower to get back online for a second shot, but you kinda expect that when you buy them. Otherwise, all are good weapons.

I thought for the longest that there was no difference, and that nothing could improve the feel and touch of the Kimbers. Then I got the Brown, strictly based on gunlust and looks. The trigger is better, the fitting is superb, and the accuracy is better than I can keep up with. Doesn't mean your target is more dead, but died in better style for sure.

In short, the Brown is better than any production gun I've ever handled. That includes Dan Wesson, Kimber, Colt, and Rock Island. YMMV.
