Saturday AM my hunting buddy and I went to scout for hog sign at the P'goula WMA. We brought our guns in case we got lucky. On the way out, we got stopped by the rangers and Jackson County Sherrifs. Apparently, in the P'goula WMA, you can only hunt hogs during any other open season for game with weapons allowed during that season. Since deer season is over, our 30-06 and 308 rifles were not allowed and we got citations for that. From now until deer season in the fall, only small game weapons are allowed. Right now it is 22 rimfire or archery. It seems rather silly to hunt hogs with 22 rimfires, but the ranger said it is possible.

We will be going back, this time with 22LRs and a bow I have. Frankly, I think the bow, a hunting compound, is the best weapon...

If you have private land, you can use any waepon after March 1st....

Hope this is helpful.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck!! You got be careful and read each WMAs rules and open seasons -- almost all vary to some degree.

However, did you find some good signs of hogs?

Yep, I think that's the rule everywhere unless you're actually hunting them to stop predation - like they're destroying your crop or something.

MDWF&P is really screwing up with these stupid rules about what caliber you can use, etc. If these hogs aren't eradicated in fairly short order or at least killed back to a stable population level they're going to take over everything. They're hell on the true game populations. Have a friend just outside of town here where hogs have gotten so bad on his place that they never even SEE deer anymore, much less kill any. He used to have them right in his yard eating acorns from under the oak trees.

Wild hogs are a menace and the game & fish boys are discouraging people from hunting them with all their stupid-assed rules.

They just do not want us outlaws in the woods with a "big" rifle when deer season is not open .... I would think it would easier to take down a deer with a .22 than it would be a large hog!!

An outlaw is an outlaw - by definition they do not obey the laws anyway!!

Yes, the firearm restrictions do seem rather silly. Seems like hunting on private property is the way to go. If we had the opportunity, we would gladly hunt on some folk's land that wanted them gone.

I have seen 2 good sized hogs killed in there tracks with a 22. But then again I have heard of them taking .270 round/s and still live a little while.
And not too long ago this guy I know that has a little farm had to put a pig down and it was late at night so he didn't want to be too loud.
He used a few 40 S&W rounds that didn't even phase the pig. After like 30 minutes the pig was still walking around so he shot it a few times with his bow and the pig still walked around for a while.
Can you use 22 mag? If so thats what I would do, but head shots only. You don't want a P'd off hog after you.

Gotta watch those Pascagoula WMA wardens! Let's just say, if they don't recognize your from the area, they will try to find any reason they possibly can to give you a ticket. Better have your act together when you go in there! Hell what am I sayin, even if you are from the area, with the exception of a few Vancleavers for some reason. Hmmm, almost like they are trying to deter people from there sometimes. Wonder if those Vancleave boys are paying them club dues if ya know what I mean?

Brutus you are correct. I hunt in Matherville which is in Wayne county and I saw 1 adult doe all season long, we killed 8 bucks and 3 does and 1 of those was a yearling doe. The hogs have about run all the deer out, from what I understand bucks will tolerate the hogs more than does will. I also understand the hogs will kill and eat fawns which may be the reason we didn't see many deer last few years. Went to check game camera 2 weeks ago, found 3 or 4 different deer tracks and literally hog tracks of all sizes everywhere. Trapping them in large pens is about the most effective.

I think the bucks CAN tolerate them better because they've got weapons on their heads that the does and little ones don't have.

My friend outside of town that I mentioned has been doing for several years now what you suggested - trapping them. He put up a square pen-type trap built out of hog/cattle panels with overlapping ends for the entryway. The way he's got the ends lapped together it works kind of like a catfish trap - they can walk through but not back out. Neat set-up. Anyhow, he's baited it before on a Friday evening and come back on Monday evening to find as many as 8-10 hogs in it from just over the course of the weekend. He usually puts them up and cleans them out for a week on straight corn before he kills them to eat. He gives away most of them and only keeps the best looking ones for smoking on his pit.

I'm glad we don't have them on our deer hunting land. It's probably only a matter of time, though. We have a creek running through it with a large bottom in areas and hogs just LOVE that sort of territory.

Old thread, I know. But has anyone found any good spots to get hogs on the Pascagoula WMA? I am going out there this weekend and I'm looking for advice. I was planning on scouting out this area here maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=30.64862,-88.630958&spn=0.019716,0.042014&sll=30.645666,-88.634434&sspn=0.019716,0.042014&t=h&z=15 since I can drive pretty close and then scout around.

I have been hunting over in Little Biloxi WMA these past few weekends and haven't seen any signs of hog, but I saw that y'all are looking in Pascagoula, so I figured that I'd give it a try. Thanks

Pascagoula WMA has hog sign everywhere. It has ruined the deer hunting and the Department of Wildlife hasn't helped in doing anything about it by discouraging people from hunting the off seasons with dumb rules. Have your act together though, the wardens here will check your grandma in the church parking lot if her Sunday hat is camo.

They might be surprised to find my 86 year young maw maw packing heat(9mm). I do agree that the state should have NO restrictions on calibers, much less what weapon we use. At the current rate of infestation, we may need to use a few well places grenades! The last few areas I've been to hunt in the Bienville forest have not had anything but hog signs...

I might be wrong, but when I was a kid, I never went into the woods during deer season without wearing orange.  During the summer, I never gave it a second thought.  Perhaps there are restrictions on centerfire rifles on public land for safety reasons?

Nah...there are restrictions on guns because if they find you with a deer rifle out of season they can ticket you without having to show that you were deer hunting...doesn't matter if you have a pile of dead hogs in your truck, you were hunting deer out of season!  Great bit of reasoning there, and makes a lot of fine money for the state.
