Does anyone know where I can take my son hog hunting around the Raymond/Jackson area
If you're down on the coast, anyplace near a creek or river there will be pigs. Pascagoula swamp I know is full of them. I live and hunt on the Pearl River and there is no shortage of them here either. Anywhere from Hwy 90 all the way to Hwy 26. PIGS ARE EVERYWHERE!! Please come kill some!!Lt.Dan said:I am wondering the same thing except down here by the coast.
Let me know next time you are going to go, I will come help the cause. I've never hunted hogs and it's on my bucket list haha.walkiahgunman said:If you're down on the coast, anyplace near a creek or river there will be pigs. Pascagoula swamp I know is full of them. Yep, all them places are great. Good tip on the little 'uns too. They taste way better! Also carry a good grunt call, you can give a few deep grunts with a regular ole buck grunt and get 'em in close. Also you can call 'em back most times after you shoot one and bust a few more. Just don't cut 'em no slack, these things are already a problem and are only gonna get worse with time.btr568 said:Pearl River,Little Biloxi,Ward Bayou,Upper&Lower Pascagoula,Red Creek, have as many as you'd like to kill and drag out.But I'll give ya'll a big tip, shoot the little ones they are way easier to get back to your truck
Hell, eat 'em yourself. There's nothing wrong with them. They taste great. The little ones especially aren't really gamey at all. Half them down the back bone and smoke 'em up in halves!Lt.Dan said:If I take one down does anyone want the meat? I don't think I will be eating them but I won't have it go to waste. I know they are a problem and just need to die, but I can't bring myself to waste food.
Any major caliber rifle will drop them just fine - .308, .30-'06, 8mm Mauser, etc., etc. I've heard from a friend with personal experience that 7.62x39 is a little iffy. It'll kill 'em, but they'll likely run off a ways and the environs where you hunt them makes it hard to find them if they make it very far before they die.chbrow10 said:What is the general process here? Are they nocturnal? Do you need to hunt at night?
Do you stalk these or wait in ambush? I have heard that the skin is very tough, is there a threshold caliber?
What are the typical ranges that you shoot at? Do you clean/field dress these like every other animal?
Down here we mostly hunt them with dogs, but I personally enjoy it more stalk hunting them. Here in Pearl River County, in either Bogue Chitto NWR or Old River WMA, I usually just ease through the woods real slow and most times you can hear them rootin around (especially when the leaves are dry). Stay with the wind in your favor(their best sense is their smell) and ease up on them. They're making so much noise rootin they usually won't hear you. If you do spook them(as long as they don't smell you) you can most times grunt 'em back in. Pop one and be still for a couple minutes, if the others didn't run too far, grunt 'em in again. This method has resulted in upto 5 kills out of one group.chbrow10 said:What is the general process here? Are they nocturnal? Do you need to hunt at night?
