Do the folks at 911 understand lat. & long.? Lets say I'm in the woods and break my leg. I've got my GPS and a cell phone with signal. If I dial 911 and give lat. & long. what are my odds?

well if one of them is smart enough to bring a gps(which i would think a search and rescue team would), then your odds should be pretty good....or if any of them actually made it out of elementary school they should be able to read a map well enough to get a general area

Don't know about the 911 operators but the responders should. I had a couple of friends that got stranded on the Miss River and they called 911 on their cell phone and gave them their location according to their GPS and the responders came right to them.

Richard, what kind of GPS and how do you like it? Been wanting a handheld for a while but heard they were hard on batteries.
I think they've been out long enough for responders to get to you, I need to the same.

I have a magellan triton 300. Not bad if its free (mine was) or on a budget, but if you can get something else, do it. :) One set of AA batteries lasts about six hours. Yeah, six hours.

usually when I'm hunting I text my wife the coords of my stand and when I'll be coming out, so she knows if I'm not home when I should be.

My dad has been a fireman/emr for almost 20 years and they use GPS to land medi-vacs all the time. They are also the biggest part of search and rescue for the area. I'm sure if they were given gps coordinates, they'd be to you in no time.
