Yeah until I stopped shooting regularly I never had a problem. All I shot was inexpensive 22 lr. I don't believe in paying for the target stuff. I shoot a green mountain barrel, and lots of modifications to the action /trigger setup.
I shoot the match stuff at an SR-1 which simulates 200 yard NRA HP target. At 100 the Mossberg M44 can hold the 10 and X-ring. With match grade .22. But yes otherwise I use off the shelf stuff, in the pistols high velocity just to ensure functioning.

I just wipe most of them down after shooting, will run a bore snake through my .22s about ever 1000 rounds that's about it.
I have a Marlin Model 60 I gave it first thorough cleaning a couple years ago because I had it apart to replace an ejector spring, it was it's first cleaning since 1976

depends on the gun, if i'm shooting corrosive ammo, etc. Not too long ago I purchased another transferrable machine gun (h&k mp5 w/ flemming sear)and it wasn't shooting correctly. I field stripped the gun and the insides were covered in gritty sand.

I clean mine when they fail my basic glancing inspection, when they malfunction or when accuracy begins to suffer. Also did a full detail on the last one I had with me in the gulf. Rode the bow in a 23foot center console and stayed wet most of the morning. So I guess I should add after saltwater fishing.

I always run a dry patch down the bore before deer season. The best thing I have ever used on the outside, blued or stainless, ( who says stainless won't rust!), is a Rig Rag. It's a wool wiper impregnated with Rig Gun Grease. It will stay ten times better than a oily rag. I've been using the same one for twenty years. I wouldn't be without one.

On a real note. I do have a plinkster 22 that I have beat to 💩…probably 250 000 rounds throu it and never broke it down and cleaned and it runs better than some of my high dollar 22s….100 bucks brand new at Walmart years ago..it would make Troy Landry proud of how abused it is..I recommend them to anybody as far as a cheap tough gun hands down

I clean them. I also do regular maintenance on vehicles and equipment. It’s not likely I will need to defend my life with one but a clean, lubricated firearm makes me feel like it may help with reliability.

After I got my M1A used I downloaded the manual and read where SA said “this rifle requires very little maintenance”. I have gotten to where I don’t clean religiously like I used to. Last I shot my 1911 I fired 7 rounds. I once would have cleaned it after that. If I shoot a box of ammo through it I’ll clean it, but I probably shoot it every several months so it’s not really a chore.

I have a Remington Model 7 .308 that copper fouls quickly. I clean it back to bare steel periodically. Maybe once a year.

I rarely clean my 22 rifle. It’s a bolt action. But then I don’t shoot a lot through it either.

I find cleaning to be satisfying and somewhat cathartic. I'm sure part of that is because of my mechanical nature. The actions/controls feel so good when freshly cleaned and lubed.
My w*fe likes to say that I only shoot so that I can come home and fondle, disassemble, and clean my firearms.

Some of my guns i clean more religiously than others. My 6”1911 is accurailed. When it’s clean with fresh oil it’s smooth as butter but after a day at the range you can just feel the grit. My scorpion I shoot suppressed all the time an all that crap gets blown back into the receiver so it’s gets cleaned a lot. My Vudoo 22 is like that 1911. When it’s clean and fresh it just feels and shoots great.

I'm curious why you would feel the need to have one on person while riding in the gulf/saltwater fishing. I spend alot of time in the gulf and have never felt it necessary. I do keep one in a dry box in my console or in my bag if on someone else's boat.

I mainly clean my carry gun, Glock G30SF, when I see lint buildup, and put a little oil on the slide once a year. I own three Glocks, never had a single problem out of any of them, my oldest I purchased in 2000.
