I had the stupidest firearms discussion today with a relative.

So I am on the phone talking to this relative today and he asks what guns I got for Christmas and I told him, he asked if I was getting one for Birthday in February and I told him yea, the wife might go in half with me to buy an AR. First a little background. This certain relative is a BIG BS'r. He spent a year in Vietnam 71-72 in Pleiku. Thats all he talks about, from the moment you meet him until he goes away. While in Vietnam he says he was LRRP. Like a friend of mine says, In VN everyone was a LRRP, there were no cooks, mechanics, supply or anything else, just infantry. So anyway, he was a LRRP and went on missions almost every day. One time to prove how good he was with the M60 MG he stood up with the belt over his shoulder and took out targets several hundred yards away shooting from his side, he is also one of the guys who walked around with a chain of "**** Ears" around his neck and one time he went to a bar in downtown Pleiku and when he went inside there were two NVA officers inside drinking at the bar, he sat down and so as not to worry them smoked some weed with them then went outside, waved down a passing jeep, got on the radio and called in artillery on the bar, leveling it and killing everyone inside. These are the kinds of stories he tells. I have seen his records, he was in Pleiku, as a WELDER in a Battalion Maintenance section, I believe it was 1-6 infantry. And he was Courts Martialed and given an undesirable discharge after fist fighting with his First Sergeant in Florida. Anyway, those are the kinds of stories he tells and he has hundreds. But today he made a statement that was a doozie. When I said I was probably going to get an AR for Birthday he asked if it was going to be a Colt. I told him probably not because they are too expensive for me. He says if it aint a Colt it is not an AR-15. I explained that a lot of companies make many different versions of AR's and you can also put one together yourself by buying parts from different manufacturers. He said, only two companies ever made an AR-15 and I carried both in Vietnam. First I explained that actually he carried an M-16, that Armalite designed the AR-15 and sold the patents to Colt who designated the selective fire version the M-16, which sold to the military and the AR-15 designation was left for the Semi-Auto versions. (Is my best understanding). Now here is the doozie I was talking about. He said "No, Colt designed and built the AR-15 for the Army then sold the rights to Mattel". I quickly informed him that Mattel is a toy company and never made a firearm. And that Colt is still making M-16's and M-4's for the military. His responce was "I know damn right well Mattell made the AR-15 because I carried one in Vietnam". I would have liked to have seen the "AR"

We all got one in the family. Good luck on the new AR, what makers you looking at beside mattel.
Never hear of an undesirable discharge, what's that equate to now, bad conduct, less than honorable or dishonorable. I know you can't buy a gun with a dishonorable but can you borrow one, such as to go hunting?

"Don’t argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience". Greg King

There is a quote about arguing with a fool in the same jist attributed to Mark Twain.

I doubt it....but maybe. I was actually in surplus city one day last spring/summer and a older sherriff's deputy(hinds I think) walked in and wanted to buy a new Glock. So he did the paperwork and handed it over and the guy behind the counter handed it back pretty quick and said they had a problem cuz he marked that he'd been dishonorably discharged. The deputy said that was the craziest thing he'd ever heard because he'd bought several other guns and had been a deputy since the 80s. And the guy at the counter told him he wasn't even allowed to carry a gun because of his DH discharge. Don't know how right on he was there but I'd be inclined to believe him...but it makes you wonder! How many people have illegally sold this guy a gun and how has he been allowed to be a deputy for nearly 30 years?

Your guy definitely sounds like a cousin(by mariage) of mine who's a Seabee(sp?). He went to Iraq a couple years ago and came back with all kinds of stories...not doubting what all he might have went though but most people who go through some of the stuff he described wouldn't talk about it and brag quite as much...

The "Undesirable Discharge" was changed in the 1980's to the "General Discharge". Given with adverse administrative action. He was actually Courts Martialed, reduced to Pvt., given loss of pay and confinement. After his confinement was over they gave him his Undesirable. And I dont know if you can or cant buy a gun with a less than honorable, but I know the form asks if you had been discharged from the military under less than honorable conditions, or words to that effect. In June for his birthday he wanted a 9MM. So I sent him 350 bucks to buy a 9MM Sigma. He filled out the paperwork and they told him he would have to wait. He waited a month and didnt hear anything back so he made some calls. He told me (So I dont know how true this is and he is in Texas so I dont know if they do things this way down there) but he told me that when he called whoever he called, they told him that they were sending him a PIN number in the mail and he could go anywhere and buy any gun on that PIN number without a background check. He never did get the gun, or any other gun for that matter.

I have heard that once upon a time Mattel was contracted to supply some of the furniture for the early A1 rifles (ie, stocks and forends). However, I have no idea if its true or not; but I've never heard the story of them supplying a complete rifle to the government.

Maybe the Mattel idea is actuall his confusion due to the swapping from the m14s and other heavy guns to the m16, which was bound to feel like a toy in comparison......or maybe he's just full of sh!t

I had an ex Army dude not long ago tell me he was a machine gunner and carried "The .60 caliber" machine gun and it was his all time favorite.

I then asked "You mean an M-60?" and I just got that blank expression in response and he reiterated that it was a .60 caliber machine gun, not an M-60.

My dad said he had heard Mattel made the handgrips on the early M16 and Mattel would be stamped on them so they started referring to them as toy guns because they were light felt like a toy gun, made of cheap plastic and unreliable. He served in Vietnam '65-'67
