I know a lot of you won't agree with me but they have ruined Primitive Rifle Season in Mississippi.

I believe the rifles used during this season should be traditional side lock muzzle loaders only. Also, iron sights only.

I guess this comes from my being from Pennsylvania. In that State, they only allow Flintlocks. I don't agree with Flintlocks Only but it seems to me they have opened a can of worms. You can use a .35 Whelen or a .35 Remington and I don't think either caliber can be considered primitive.

Waiting for the comments,

Doug

i agree with you Doug...all theMDWFP messing around with the rules never seems to matter much...I wish they would just leave well enough alone for a while instead of tweaking it every year

folks still don't shoot near enough does regardless of the weapon and the deer population is out of control

thin the herd....Whack and stack

Does my use of a centerfire cartridge hinder your ability to take game or cause you any sort of physical pain?
No - but just do away with the title "primitive weapon" and open gun season during that period -- use what you want use -- no difference!

When I hear Primitive Weapon Season I think of people running around the wood with rock tied to stick make a club or a spear not a gun of any type. That's primitive.

I am fine with centerfires being allowed during primitive weapson season, I bought a 45/70 the day after they change the regulations. :D

Bought it in 2005 when the regs first changed, it was the first to go when Doc said no centerfires.

So, to paraphrase some of the opinions.....

The quality of the kill is up to the hunter and his/her weapon of choice.....

I can buy that... If you wanna Rambo a deer with a knife by attacking from a limb, more power to you.....

I think I'll choose the "SIDE" of the clean kill....so maybe the regulations should have some qualification...you have to proove that you can actually make the kill because you have "mastered" the weapon you choose to use......

If they stop calling it a "primitive" season, I'm okay with whatever they want to do. I'm not much of a hunter, but I do remember when people were a lot more gun savvy than they are now, and when the guys with the muzzle loaders worked their butts off for every ounce of meat they took out of the woods.

I saw a "hunter" sighting in his .35 Whelen Encore yesterday, along with a modern bolt action in a newer, better, designer caliber.

I was sort of turned off about the whole thing, as he probably fired $100 worth of that expensive designer stuff and quite a few dollars' worth of Whelen to get on target at 25 yards. But he's "ready" for both the "primitive" and regular seasons, by golly.

Me, I might hunt this year, and it'll be with a Sharps 74, which WAS produced prior to 1900 and uses a caliber that dates to 1872. That's as "primitive" as I plan to get, but I think it's a heck of a lot more true to the spirit of the original primitive weapons season than some stainless steel abortion that looks like Luke Skywalker playing cowboys and aliens.

I 100% agree with Doug. I hunt Public land about 99.99% of the time.Years ago when a muzzleloader was a muzzleloader, you didn't see a whole bunch of folks hunting during the two week Primitive weapon season. So you might think"well that's not good cause not many deer are being killed"....that might be true but,I believe those two weeks gave the deer a much needed break from the Orange army and the dogs.

Now,the so called Primitive season is the busiest season of all (at least where I hunt).Everyone has a 45/70......But what I've noticed is,less deer are seen in the daylight hours, although you see more tracks, rubs and scrapes than ever before.I've heard many hunters say the same things over the last few years.

I truly believe the deer are going more and more nocturnal and the does are instilling into there fawns to be nocturnal.
