I posted on Guns Wanted for a 1911 clone. My brother was going to buy me a used one for Christmas. Well I really didnt get much on the wanted ad. My brother came over tonight and informed me he was buying me a NEW 1911 for Christmas (Im actually getting it in the next week or so) and I had $600 to spend. Only thing he wants is for me to give him my Hi-Point CF .380. I think I can do that. Well I was actually thinking of a used Colt, but they arent to be found for 600 or less. So I have narrowed it down to the following 1911's:

Interstate Arms Gov. Model.
American Classic
Citadel
Springfield Armory
Taylors and Company

Now I just have to do some more research. Any opinions on these brands?

Out of those, I would go with the Springfield.

I would think the Springfield would retain more value, should you ever decide to sell or trade it.

A friend at work showed me an add for a Stainless Springfield Loaded model in the "Tradewinds" magazine. You should be able to find a copy at most convenience stores. Might be worth a try! I think the adds stay in for 2 weeks. Good luck, hope this helps...

EVerywhere I look for a reasonably priced GI Mil-Spec SA they are sold out. Most places are sold out and will not backorder (Like cheaperthandirt). I am looking at maybe a High Standard. Any opinions on these? Anyone with first hand knowledge? I have read some really good reviews on these guns.

The Rock Island and High Standard are the same gun, both are made by Armscor, I know the Rock is a good gun so the High Standard should be too.

The High Standard runs about $100 more than the RIA. I have read numerous reviews today saying it is equal to or better than the SA. I have handled both of them, the HS today and other than the name cant seem to tell the difference although the proof would be in the firing. They both seem to be nice guns. I didnt see any poor quality in the HS, everything was smooth and tight. I think I am going with the HS and get him to buy me a new set of grips with it. (Just to note, he is getting some guitar related gifts in return that will equal the gun he is buying me). But anyway, I was surprised to see that there were several other 1911 clones out there under $400. And Cheaperthandirt has the RIA on sale for $379, which is tempting. But I know where I can get the HS right in Jackson for well under $500 and that means no shipping costs and transfer fee.

I absolutely love my HS! Good choice you won't regret it! As far as a bare bones 1911 goes it's as good as it gets IMO. Mine has a very nice finish, great fit, it's as accurate as I can get it with GI sights. It was my first 1911 and if I ever do actually sell a gun...it won't be this one.

And bare bones is what I want. Tauras has a PT1911 Custom for around 600 but I am not interested in anything like that. I am/was looking for the gun I carried for 15 years in the Army (Until we changed over to the 9MM) and this HS fits the bill.

it does that....just dont bother with HPs...loves ball ammo....mine really likes the cheap federal from walmart. bought mine used, so no telling the round count....at first it was picky but then i just threw a new wolff recoil and firing pin spring in there and it'll eat any kind of ball, but havent tried any HPs since then

I have two Rock Island and they will eat anything. They are about the best buy for the money and Customer service going in the 1911's. A GI full size will usually cost less than $400.

I'll never hire you as a researcher, you missed Remington! It has something the other clones mentioned doesn't have, a MADE IN USA stamp! It's in your budget, too!

On Cabelas website it says the High Standard is American made. But I read a review that said they were made in Brazil.
Ivan(Sales Rep) at Armscor said they build the parts for HS in the Phillipines in the same Armscor factory as Rock Islands and assemble them in the U.S. at one time, but if they could get parts from Brazil (IMBEL maybe?) cheaper I can see then changing parts suppliers.

Springfield's parts use to made in Brazil by IMBEL and assembled in the U.S. but don't know if they still do.
