I am looking for ideas and suggestions for a new range. I am kicking around the idea of a new range in Jackson County.

ASSUME there is limited start up funds, so it's not the "DREAM" range. It is a large piece of property that can be developed into something nice over time.

What is the minimum as far as amenities go?
What is the structure like, ie; I own it and tell you whats what or I own it and the membership decides whats what?
It may to be out in the country, how far are you willing to travel to get to it?
How do the bills get paid? Membership fee, donation cup, flat fee charge for a day...?

I welcome any other suggestions you might have. Please feel free to PM me if you are not interested in posting your response.

Yes, I agree, but be sure and check into possible liabilities, as well. Sorta the nature of the beast that things can go wrong that are out of your control. I'd hate to see you lose a nice piece of land due to someone else's negligence or accident, because you didn't have yourself covered. I suspect you'll find it's not as easy as it would seem, unless you're willing to deed the land over to the club and the club is incorporated. The shooting club also has an obligation to protect it's members against personal liability, as well. A good gun friendly attorney might be the best person to talk to after you've gotten the info mentioned above. I love seeing new ranges open, but would hate to see anyone lose his shirt over his good intentions. I suspect the same general rules apply that would apply to a well organized deer camp.

I like the idea and hope the best for you. Just my luck it would be all the way in Jackson Co. I have heard of some guys that started a hunting club and they put the ownership of the land in a "Trust" and leased it from the trust. Then everyone signed a waiver to "hold harmless", maybe not worth the paper it written on but that's how they started.
Good luck

Get with Doug Bowser, he is the NRA certified Range Development Officer. He even teaches classes and acts as an official NRA consultant on new ranges. As a matter of fact he is doing just that this coming weekend in Louisiana.

Amenities: Restrooms are a must have for the ladies I shoot with. Covered firing lines, one short range (200 ydds) plinking and one long range (1000 yds). Shotgun range for skeet or sporting clays. Covered pavillion or range house for gun cleaning or maintenance. Classes/Instruction in all phases of gun handling from never touched one before to competion level, care and feeding and concealed carry of guns.

Fees: Annual membership AND flat rate daily fee. Should be free for the fifth person to reply to this post.

I would travel up to 45 minutes to a good range. When I go it is usually for half day or longer.
