I'm loading up some now for my 308 with 168 Berger VLD's

42 Grains

Don't be too quick to judge...This stuff is a reformulation of what the "good stuff" used to be....So far I like the way it throws....

I dunno yet...but I know enough that when groups are not what I'd like its usually the shooter.... You can't really tell how good a group is till you shoot em 300 yards...100 yards don't tell you jack...i've shot 5 shots in one hole at 100 yards only to get my feelings hurt bad at 300 yards....there you have to start taking wind and mirage into effect...which is the real world...like I said...100 yards aint a good measure IMHO

More later when I test my loads...I know a couple F class shooters that luv the stuff in 308...

Try using some decent match primers CCI BR2 and some decent Lapua brass and report back

Testing at 100 takes alot more of the shooter out of the equation. Which, is exactly what you want when load testing. The further you shoot, the more human error you introduce. Load testing is better done close!

It all depends on what you consider a "good load"

A good hunting load?...yeah...you can probably get away with it... You wanna be shooting X's at 600 yards?... need good ammo and it needs to be very tight...I'd say an inch or less at 300...

For me, its a lot easier to see significant group size changes at 300 than at 100..Like I said before I've been impressed with myself before at 100 and then had to "re-group" (no pun intended) when shot at longer distance

My 2 cents...

The good news is...There's tons of powder suitable for 308....Varget, 4064, Reloader 15 to name just a few...

Back to topic...such as it is...IMR 8208 XBR (Extreme BenchRest) I have no doubt is good powder...wish I was closer and I'd take it off his hands

Good Luck in the quest for the "magic load"

Try some CCI BR2's or Federal 210M primers

match primers are worth the extra $ if its accuracy you want...

Lapua Brass, Neck size only, sort your bullets on a scale by weight, trickle charge your powder to make sure they all have exactly the same charge

all these little things give you accuracy in small increments..Depends on how good is good enough

If your gun likes Varget... shoot it...

but that don't mean your next gun won't luv 8208XBR is all I'm saying....

Look...I'm no expert on long range shooting or reloading...the only point I'm trying to make is testing at 300 yards over 100 is better if you really wanna know what is going on...

308 bullets don't fully stablize for 300 yards or so...Thus...you can have what you think is a great load at 100...and have suckage at 300....been there

There are a million things to tweak in reloading for the "magic load"...I'm still looking for it myself

read: http://www.6mmbr.com/jgcaseprep.html

then get ready to get anal about your loading

Keep that bottle of 8208 U might just decide you like it later

Best to you in your quest
