I've heard a person can apply for a CCW in MS, but I've also been told it was restricted to people whom deal with money, receipts and the like so I didn't even try. What are the qual's on this. If it's on another thread, forgive my repetition and guide me to it so I can educate myself.

For those of you scratching your heads over how long I've been here and don't know the statutes on this, I haven't really kept up with State law because for fourteen of the last sixteen yrs. I always thought and said I'd be moving back to Memphis soon. Ignorant as , yes, but MS has grown on me over the years despite my self-delusion and I'll probably retire here eventually. Heck, I've been living in Aberdeen since 1996 and I still don't know a damn thing about the town. Bear with me, fellas, please. Most of my time down here I've been OUTUS and on the highway as a truck driver.

As far as I know, you don't need a reason other than personal defense to get a firearms permit. Of course some legal and mental issues may disqualify a person, but other than that, if you got the cash, you're in. Presently, MS is very pro-gun. Presently.

Absolutely, positively you do NOT have to meet the old criteria "carry money, etc." in order to get a CCW permit in Mississippi.

(That was the criteria years ago but was changed in 1990 when the state passed the newer CCW law.)

Start here and read about how you get a permit.

http://www.dps.state.ms.us/dps/dps.nsf/webpages/firearms_main?OpenDocument

You must fill out the forms, attach a photo (you can get one at Walgreens or make your own at home), have your signature notarized (most banks have a notary), and go to a nearby Mississippi Highway Patrol Substation (not your local drivers license place), pay them and get finger printed.

There are substations located in Jackson, Greenwood, Batesville, New Albany, Starkville, Meridian, Hattiesburg, D'Iberville, and Brookhaven. Call to find out what days and times they accept CCW applications---it's only certain days and times each week.

It costs $132 first time.

Every other renewal can be mailed in.

Renewals are like $82.

They are good for 5 years.

You will get it in the mail in 45 days.

Do this! It is very important.

Also, as a truck driver, you need to check interlock icy laws of other states. I know Tennessee and Arkansas, at one time, required a permit to carry a weapon in your vehicle. I lived in Arkansas and frequented Memphis and ALMOST learned that law the hard way!

just a prosess to go through. fill out the app, get it notorized, get photo and staple to it. get finger printed and turn it all in. think about it and be sure your record is squeekly clean.
get and read some articals on conceled carry and know why you are carrying it. its a mind set, not for funzies.

You really don't need a reason at all.

Mississippi is what's called a "shall issue" state, as opposed to what's called a "may issue" state. That means you don't have to have a reason or justification for applying for a CCW license and that the issuing authority (MHP) has to have a reason for NOT approving your app. The issuing authority in a "may issue" state may issue at THEIR discretion.

In Mississippi, you don't have to have a reason to get it, THEY have to have a reason for NOT giving it.

At least that's how it was explained to me by a lawyer.

Check on what's called "reciprocity" with other states. Many states recognize the validity of CCW licenses from other states. Some do not.

I Have One...It Wasn't A Problem...Just Quite A Wait

Applying is fairly straight forward. I got my Firearms Permit last year, apparently along with half of the residents along the Gulf Coast, if the number of folks at the Hancock County substation was any indication! The times that the fingerprint guy is there limits the times you can go to the substation for permitting, so there is apparently always going to be a crowd. The new applicants as well as the renewals must be fingerprinted. Get there before the doors open and be prepared to wait. The substation in Harrison County only processes FP applicants until about noon. While I was there, several folks were turned away who came late because there was already a backlog of people waiting. Once you complete everything at the substation, you will get a temporary carry permit until your photo ID permit comes in the mail (about two months) that will allow you to carry in your vehicle, hotel rooms and private residences, but not on your person, in public, until you have your photo ID Permit.

What they said...get one...because you can! ...CC...
