The FBI just released its monthly report of the number of National Instant Check System background checks performed last month and June set another new all-time record. The Bureau performed 3,931,607 background checks last month. That’s 5% over the previous record set in March of this year and a whopping 70% over last June’s total.

The FBI has performed over 19 million background checks in the first half of this year. That’s about the same total for all of 2012.

Here’s the regular monthly caveat: this number does not represent the number of guns sold. Many background checks are performed for other reasons such as permit renewals, etc. The NSSF will be out with their monthly adjusted NICS total that corrects for that in a day or two. Keep in mind also that many states don’t require a background check for gun buyers with carry permits.

All of that said, it’s safe to say that gun sales were through the roof last month. Retailers report they are struggling to keep up, reporting land office business. They’re selling guns and ammunition faster than they’ve ever seen at any time in the past.

My oh my. Seems to me that "bipartisanship", "peaceful coexistence", "political solutions", "negotiation", etc. have left the building.

Yep. I bought one this month.

After the FBI released their raw NICS totals, this morning, the NSSF has now released the adjusted NICS firearm background check totals for June. The NSSF’s numbers correct for background checks run for purposes other than a gun purchase. To no one’s surprise, the June firearm sales numbers were staggering.

Here’s their press release:

The June 2020 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 2,177,586 is an increase of 135.7 percent compared to the June 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 924,054. For comparison, the unadjusted June 2020 FBI NICS figure 3,909,502 reflects a 70.6 percent increase from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,291,066 in June 2019.
The second quarter 2020 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 5,451,599 reflects an increase of 92.8 percent over the 2,827,606 figure for first quarter 2019.
Please note: Twenty-five states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.
The states of Alabama and Michigan had law changes that affected their Brady Law standing which removed qualifying alternate permits usage for firearm transactions. These changes went into effect July 22, 2019 for Alabama, and March 3, 2020 for Michigan. In June 2020, Alabama state’s NSSF-adjusted NICS was 430.9 percent higher than June 2019, which accounts for an additional 60,109 checks over this time last year. June 2020 NICS numbers for Michigan were up 427.4 percent over June 2019 and account for an additional 64,748 checks.
Regarding the record number of gun sales, the NSSF’s Mark Oliva said this:

“These figures represent the highest June on record since the FBI began conducting instant background checks more than 20 years ago. The sharp in increase in Americans buying firearms in June continues a trend we saw start in the spring. Civil unrest, rioting, looting and calls to defund police are unquestionably motivating factors of why this trend is increasing.
“Americans are right to be concerned for their personal safety. It’s entirely reasonable that law-abiding citizens are exercising their Constitutional right to purchase a firearm to protect themselves. Our nation’s elected representatives should take heed of where their constituents are on gun ownership today. Politicians who entertain notions of defunding police departments are the same ones who call for strict gun control and even outright confiscation. These figures aren’t push polls. They are representative of Americans from all walks of life who are taking action and taking responsibility for their rights and their safety.”
