Yes!

It can be built up with parts that are strengthend to with stand those types of stresses if you have the money to do it. I wouldn't do it with a factory stock revolver. If you look in the Ruger manual they recemend against it as well.

You bet it is bad. Another thing, when handling an old style single action revolver, When you put the hammer on half cock or loading cock, always pull the hammer to full cock before letting the hammer down. It can damage the cylinder locking bolt.
