So I was performing my sacred Wednesday ritual of watching Midway USA's Wednesday Night at the Range on the Outdoor Channel, and part of it is always the rating he gives to handguns based on certain criteria.

As I recall, it's time to get the first round on target (paper plate at howevermanyyardsitis), then how long it takes after that to get 3 more rounds on target, and finally the "knock-down" factor of the round in question.

Anyhow, this week it was the Kimber Ultra Carry II in .45 ACP, a firearm I recently sought out and bought for the express purposes of having a lightweight, thin, and concealable gun I'd be willing to carry every day.

Out of 1000 possible points, the UCII took 960 points. Pretty good scoring for an antiquated round out of an inadequate gun, but then again, what does Potterfield know about diddly?

Ole Larry aint gonna give anything a perfect score bro....

Larry knows diddly...He extracts several hundred a month out of my wallet...pretty much every month...He's been doing it for years to.... :p

Larry's unscientific rating method is :bull: but I still luv to watch it...

BTW, You seldom see a gun writer or anyone on the gun shows on TV ever say much negative about a product...including Larry

"...antiquated round out of an inadequate gun" -- Of all people, you can not talk about a 1911 that way!! :tears:

I think he does a fair deal on it. He ain't gonna P.O. anyone (man knows what side his bread is buttered) but does rate stuff pretty fairly. He even does a diplomatic way of saying a .25 ain't cutting it, now that takes skill.

I was actually pleased with his rating. I think it's hard to objectively rate things like "how long it takes to get the first shot on target." I'd say chance and luck play into that one pretty heavily-for example, I think I recall the full frame 1911 taking longer to get the first shot on target than the UCII, which is either happenstance or operator error IMHO.

Then again, when I start pulling down all of 'neck's discretionary income every month like Larry, I can do my own rating system. When I'm not huntin' or shootin', that is....

Now a little 25 would not be my 1st choice. But I helped a friend, skin a deer that he finished off with with a little 25. He shot it in the head with a Speer Gold Dot 35 grain pill and the bullet ended up in the deers neck. Surprised me. After that, I would use one if it was a backup gun. I also like ole Larry, they are good about shipping out merchandise within 24 hours if it is in stock.
