I've never owned one (a Leatherman)...and never really thought I 'needed' one, but I guess maybe now I am going to seriously look into getting one.

I had a Gerber Multi Tool that I got a looong time ago and was never impressed with it. Gave it to my brother who was a diesel mechanic at the time. He told me of numerous times he used it for stripping wires for brake lights on a truck or a trailer and how it sometimes would close up on him and pinch his fingers... blood and cuss words soon followed... :128: and yet this was my fault... like most things are.. :rotflmao:

Anyhow...whatcha recommend and why? I know some of the Maintenance guys at Nissan will chime in here. I know for a fact 1 carries one. And everything else you could need to fix/build/destroy anything, on his belt... I hear he makes knives too... I think I needa get one cuz of the random crap that happens to come up in a night in our zone that I could simply fix if I carried one... I don't need it as a 'knife', I carry 2. and even that may change. I don't really know wtf I need it for... but yea I'm sure I can find a use for it, good or bad... what's y'alls input?

I've carried a Leatherman since the mid '80's. Currently I carry a Leatherman Wave and I'm very happy with it. Has most everything I can use and it locks well. I tried other brands and none did it for me. I lucked up and got it at Hudson's salvage when they had the Gander Mt. stuff a few years ago. (Along with a 22" 870 Slug barrel!)

I got a little off-shoot of the leatherman as a little gift. Just use it to open box, cut or strip wire, take off covers and other stuff at my work. Saved me many a trip back for a tool I don't normally carry. The best part about it is a little LED flashlight that folds down in one of the handle. That little son of a gun has lasted 3 years on one set of batteries. Probably uses that wafer batteries cause it is about the same size as a AAA battery. Anybody know of a nice one with a flashlight, let me know where they saw it and I'll get another one.

I've never liked the mult-tools because I could never find one with a rubber grip...insulated handle

Most I have seen were all metal....touch some electrical stuff with it by accident and it will light you up like a Christmas tree...

Think i've seen one that has an insulated handle but can't remember what brand

i think a leatherman could fix the economey better than obama has
Who couldn't?

Understand, though, that Obama is TRYING to destroy the US economy; so he can rebuild it using the Marxist model.

But without the support of idiots like Tim Leatherman, we'd have McCain in there screwing up the country accidentally.

My vote still goes to huckabee! He could screw up stuff accidentally and still be cool! Civil Norris keeps speaking for him and his huckpac thing, so know what I'm hoping for? HuckChuck in 2012!

We all know Obama reeks, and other than not sticking the knife near exposed electrical wires I should be good...

Lets not get into political shenanigans here.. other than the non insulating grips does anyone else have any gripes with the tools/designs?

Sorry about the digression.

Like any "multipurpose tool" they are less handy than each dedicated purpose tool.

E.g., the pliers are less useful than real pliers; the knife blade is less useful than a real knife; the screwdriver is less useful than a real screwdriver.

But if you can't carry a toolbox with you, the multipurpose tool is very handy to have in many situations.

As I said, I keep mine in my desk drawer at the office and use it several times each year.

Yeah NRA, they're "good enough" to get most stuff done but no one's showed me one with a little flashlight. I'm in the dark working a lot of the time. But some of the ladies say I do my best work in the dark anyway (yeah right, I'd look like swiss cheese a minute after I came home).

I was gonna post on here but got confused whether this was a leatherman thread or a political thread.
I carry a Core also, but the op already knew that and everyone else was more concerned about politics than good tools. Sorry for the rant. Leatherman makes tools that I trust, period. I have several.

I carry a Leatherman both on duty and in civilian live, both since 1980, they where very expensive at this time in Germany, 250 German Marks at this time. Both are 30 years old and work, and it is always a pleasure when you can astonish people. When I worked at Munich I visited with my wife a fair, and a saleswoman there worked with some earrings. I asked her if I could help her, her angry answer was "you didn`t have a plier here!" Her eyes when I gave here my Leatherman I couldn`t forget, shocked and without any word she could speek.

I assume that one cannot board a plane with a Leatherman---right?

I never tried, and I would hate to give mine to the TSA screener at the airport.

PS: EVERYTHING is about politics nowadays.
