I've been researching subsonics and I've read all kinds of things. What's your subsonic load. How long can the barrel be without taking a chance of a stuck bullet. Post all your dos don'ts and any other info you feel needs to be heard.

stick with Accurate 5744 and IMR SR4759. dont get to creative with powders. subsonics have killed more guns that max loads
start at 17gr charge and slowly work back. Bottom being 12gr. Sub load info is to tricky for most to publish because what works in this gun will stick a bullet in this one... happy huntin and be safe

We have beat them out of barrels before with a rod and hammer. Not sure about damage caused but a big risk for sure. My worry would be more on not noticing the stuck projectile due to distractions , young shooter or rapid fire and another round feeds or is loaded then fired behind the stuck projectile. Have to be very alert when slowing down the bullet. Just my 2 cents.

4gr of Trailboss with a 55gr bullet in a .223 is quiet.. thats what i had out at the range last saturday. 4.5gr is supersonic. i never tried anything between 4 and 4.5gr..

I have some 308 loaded, just got to get my gun together so i can chrono them.

I can say that every gun is different. A small change in barrel length or barometric pressure will make a sub sonic round supersonic in a hurry. In order to do it right you need to get a chrono and start working a round for your gun. What works in my gun most likely will not work for you. A bullet that you load in the winter that is subsonic will not be subsonic in the heat of the summer.

Also the twist rate of your barrel has a lot to do with the weight of your projectile and that has a lot to do with the speed of the round.

May I ask why "subsonic?" What is the lure? I actually want to go about 10Xsonic!!!!!! Would love for the bullet to get there before it actually leaves the barrel!!

You SOOOO need to see my little H&R .308. 180gr of fun with none of the noise. Sounds like a BB gun hits like a 308! It may not be fast but it will get there without anyone knowing it left! :bigtu:

i feel that i need to add that anyone building a gun for use with a suppressor needs to know their twist rate. 1:8 or 1:7 is best for subsonics....1:9 maybe and 1:10 - 1:12 is what most rifle are from the factory
1:10 is the best for both sub and super sonic out of one gun. if it was dedicated to sub sonic only I would go 1:8. Most of the military long guns are 1:10. Its a happy median between the two.

I finally got to run some 180gr over the chrono yesterday out of my stevens action /savage 11 10twist 308.. 10.1gr Trailboss, WOlf LR primer, RP brass, 180gr spitzer 1025fps.
Stabilizes out to 25yds. Now that i know how fast it is and it stablizes, we put the can on it and yes sir, we have a winner!!

Gotta load up some more and check to see if they halfway group at 50yds and go from there.

I'm using 10 grains TB w/ 168gr berger hpbt.... They shoot awesome at 40 yards! Chrono'd at about 1060 fps. I actually went out and shot at 100 yards today just for grins. Seems at that distance they tended to drift a bit left. Got her dialed in so if I HAD to take a shot.... would be fine. Seems they are beginning to tumble at that distance though. Soon as I saw that I decided time to cease. Nice to know where she hits at 100 though. And like I said.... at 40 she is DEAD ON. (see 2nd pic) lol Will shoot out to 50 and 60 to see where optimum range would be. At 40 I can now hold on 2nd mil-dot and WHAMO!

Aight I got an idea. A 22lr stabilizes at very low velocities. This bullets are more rounded. I wonder if instead of using a hpbt pointed bullet in the 308, try a rounded 30/30 bullet. I wonder if a more rounded bullet would stabilize further out at lower velocities. Just food for thought.

I think you're on to something here. I've recently been reading about the pointy bullets, and that they need faster spin rates to keep them stable.
