I was standing in a local gun shop today when a woman asked the guy behind the counter if he had any "33 Long" ammunition.

He looked confused and said that he had never heard of such a caliber.

Then she asked him if one of those tiny little .22 revolvers the size of your thumb would be "a good gun for a woman".

He said, "No" Then he suggested a .38 revolver.

She never did buy anything.

Well good for him on speaking his mind and not just trying to make a sale. I will always suggest at least a 38 spl when asked my opinion. If someone comes in asking specifically for a 380 I will show them but I never volunteer them as an adequate self defense weapon. I will even try to sway someone towards a 38spl or 9mm if they are undecided on caliber but leaning toward 380.

At least he made some common sense suggestions. I'm all for that. I just hate going to shops where I want a particular type of gun only to have the salesman pull out whatever model Glock in the same caliber and tell me how much better it is.....happens a lot

And that's when I either leave, or find a salesman I'm familiar with and let him get the commission

think she ment 32smith&wesson long???
He suggested several other possible sizes and she insisted she needed "33 Long".

She was obviously didn't have a clue about guns.

Last week, I was in a gun shop (Hunters' Hollow) in Oxford and a lady came in to buy her husband a 22 handgun. The salesman asked what he planned to do with it. She said, just plinking.

She thought a Ruger MK III in the case was pretty and wanted to buy it but it did not come with a scope rail.

He sold her a Walther 22 like this and a red dot scope and a bunch of ammo.

I wonder if he can bring it back.

I also wonder if that was a straw purchase.

"STRAW PURCHASE" = A vague and debilitating definition for firearms transactions which precludes the longstanding tradition of buying a gun as a GIFT for a friend or family member.

Designed to further INFRINGE upon the rights of gunowners through incramentalism.

Yes, I said it.
Having "bought" and "endured" THREE divorces... there is no legal basis for the application of the term to this woman.

If I go buy a pistol and come home and hand it to my wife, or vice-versa, it is NOT a "illegal purchase".
Even if I give her the money and "send" her to buy it without my being there.

The very foundations and LEGAL definitions used relating to MARRIAGE and COMMUNITY PROPERTY render the ideal of "straw purchase" by a wife or husband for the spouse to be NULL & VOID .

Futhermore.....
If the gun is purchased to be kept, used, and owned within a single household/family.... then I challenge the term "straw purchase" as being unconstitutional and asinine.
The weapon is COMMUNITY PROPERTY from time of purchase until it is sold or "disbursed" by a court order.

If the term is applied so loosely, then every parent or spouse who bought a gun for a Christmas gift is a FELON.
NUTS !!!!!

And to make this applicable, the institution of MARRIAGE and the FAMILY must first be redefined or destroyed.

(oh, wait, maybe that explains why they are........ )

She chose not to buy it because it didnt have a rail? or he pushed the walther because it did have a rail?

my ruger came with a rail. one day it will get a halo on it...

Go ahead and rent the old kroger, youve probably got enough inventory to fill it up already :rotflmao:
Plenty of room for a indoor range too.

I know this is a little bit of a thread drift, but since it was discussed above, I believe a gift of a firearm to anyone that may legally own the firearm is legal and not a "straw purchase".

See the Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide, located here: http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5300-4.pdf, specifically page 165, Paragraph 15. The last paragraph in particular states:
Where a person purchases a firearm with the intent of making a gift of the firearm to another person, the person making the purchase is indeed the true purchaser. There is no straw purchase in these instances.
See also page 178, B14 regarding the gift of a firearm to a juvenile.

If there is something to the contrary, I am not aware of it.

Yeah, I have a Ruger MK II Competition Target that came with a scope rail.

The whole time the salesman was helping her, I was thinking that he was mistaken about the Ruger not coming scope ready. (He told her that he could order her a scope rail, but he did not have one in stock.)

But I checked Ruger's web site and apparently only the MK III Competition comes scope ready.

I think he was showing her a MK III Hunter.

And, yes---she REALLY wanted the Ruger, but completely lost interest when she found out it did not come scope ready. This was just before Christmas and she wanted it under the tree.

Thanks for the ATF cite. And, I agree, buying a gun for a gift is not a straw purchase.

A few years ago I was standing in Walmart in their guns and ammo section.

A customer asked the clerk behind the counter, "What's the difference between .22 and .45?"

Clerk's reply, "There's not much difference, really."

I just walked away.

Instead of a gun shop, I'm going to nominate as MS' first gun/pawn shop Czar. To avoid any semblance to impropriety, you'll need to have all your guns handed off to me in "trust".
