I was out of the truck at 6 this morning and I had alot of early action. Birds were gobbling good, although I think some of them were jakes. I probably heard 75-100 gobbles. However, once they hit the ground, it was almost silent. I did have a couple come up behind me, but I never did see them. Later, I moved to a different spot and called up several hens. At about 12 noon I spotted a longbeard crossing a trail. I got to where I thought he was headed. Once I finally caught my breath I did some light yelps.....nothing. Few minutes later, I yelped again......nothing. Then a crop duster flies over and he gobbles!. I waited about 10 seconds and yelped...and he cut me off. He was within 100 yards at this point, directly to my left. I eased around to the left and purred.....GOBBLE! Close gobble. Finally I see his red head. He went behind a tree and I had the barrel pointed waiting on him. Boom! 12:30. Dead bird. LOOOONG hunt, but worth it. 7/8 hooks, 9.5" beard.

Good bird! My FIL took me once and we had a similar hunt. Long fruitless morning. While putting things away in the truck he slammed the door and a bird gobbled. We stood behind the truck and he yelped a few times. That bird came running up the road we drove in on. You never can tell what they will respond to, but I don't advocate door slamming as the call of choice.
