To say that this deer season has been discouraging would be a major understatement as far as I'm concerned. I have put in some major hours and just can't seem to get on them. I was fortunate enough to kill a doe back in bow season. Nothing since. Several long, long hunts. Nothing. I couldn't go this morning after ringing in the new year helping my wife with our 3 year old son all night last night as he was suffering through the latest stomach virus to hit our household. He was feeling better so I slipped off this afternoon and went to a stand I helped my dad build last year. Got in the stand around 3 and didn't see anything til about 5. I caught a glimpse of something white slipping through some brush about 75 yards away. I threw up the binocs, saw he was "big enough", and put the crosshairs on his shoulder as he was moving at a fast walk. Finally got to shoot a deer with my new Savage '06. He is tall and tight. Not a monster, but a welcome sight to me with the season I've had so far.
