I know of a few places around Hattiesburg that are used as public ranges and have been for quite some time, but all of them are a bit sketchy to me. One is in the DeSoto or on the edge of the DeSoto south of Hattiesburg, one is off 98 headed toward Mobile, and the closest one to the area you mentioned is off Hwy 589 near Epley between Sumrall and 98. PM me if you want directions or more info. It is nothing more than a gravel/dirt pit like area on what I was told is 16th section land. There is a lot of brass/hulls on the ground, so someone has definitely used it for shooting, and I was told about it by a guy that occasionally uses it. I haven't shot there though and would want to look into it further before going to shoot.

It is a shame that a town the size of Hattiesburg has no NRA gun club. The members of the forum should try to form one. I am the President of the Mississippi State Firearm Owners Association and the NRA Range Technical Team Advisor for Mississippi. I would come to Hattiesburg and meet with you any time you want to. I can advise you on the process in starting a club and help determine the suitability of the proposed land selected for the range.

Ha thanks for the invitation Mr. Doug but I am a softball player in my spare time. Would like to just shoot some to break in the gun and get a feel for it. I've always been a good shot and achieve the high score on competition shooting games 9 out of 10 times but have never fired a real gun. I know it's different than games but I would like to try my hand at it before getting a club or joining one.

And Where exactly is that place on 589 you were talking about DJChaffin cause I actually live about a mile from 589 right outside of Sumrall. Takes me 15 minutes to get to 98

I used to shoot at the Laurel shooting center, when I lived down there. It's not too bad. Now I'm living in the Jackson area and looking for a place that my wife and I can go on the weekends.

Im surprised we dont have some sort of range in Hattiesburg. I shoot in Ellisville but its a long drive. I wish someone would open something close to home.
