Lube - the AR

I noticed many AR failures the other day at our McCain shoot ... one of them was a rifle of mine I had let sigma use ... I noticed from the tower that he was having to pull the charging handle back after each shot in order to chamber the next round - he was using wolf ammo (no big deal to me - I have shot a lot of it) ... I knew I had not cleaned that weapon for sometime and knew it was getting pretty dry ... After the relay I told him to get some spray breakfree from my truck spray the bolt down good and put it back into the gun "dripping wet" ..Sigma took it back to the line and it functioned without a hitch ... here are a couple of photos I stumbled across regarding lubing the AR L= Light Oil G= Generous Oil --- as you can see, much more Gs that there are Ls ..

Had similar problems with malfunctions due to lube or lack there of. The diagrams posted will be extremely helpful especially to first timers or those with less experience. Found that using a light coating of white lithium grease works well and doesnt dry up too quickly whether your on the range or if its sitting in the case. Figured id throw that out there since it seems to work well but I havent been able to find a definate answer as to whether or not theres something better out there or if the lithium grease Im using is sufficent.

The crew with me suffered alot of stuck cases.
I got home and cleaned both my ARs very very well. Especially the chamber. Oiled it down with militec1 and met up with dockrocker at the range today. With a clean rifle, i wanted to see how many rounds it took to stick a case. I think i was on my 6th 30rd mag. Got the first one, had another 2 more before i got to the 10th mag. I melted the handguard to by the way :D.
Got dockrockers AR and on the first mag it stuck one. So from now on im gonna avoid Tula 223 ammo.
Im gonna get some wolf and see if i can get a stuck case in a freshly clean rifle.

I have been using the militec1 for a couple years now and i really like it. Lube all the points above and when its nice and dirty you can clean it with just a rag. It acts like a slick barrier. The carbon doesnt stick to the metal.

I use tetra gun. I put over 300 rounds through my ar Saturday without a malfunction. When I broke it down for cleaning the action was still nice and went. I believe in that stuff. I've had the ame bottle for years and it's still half full. Proves a little of this stuff goes a long way.

Since we're on the topic of lube, what are your preferences for lubes oils for your AR? I currently have a DPMS LR308 and am using CLR and Rem Oil. Good? Bad? Average?
Average-Good for the most part. Im more of an lube man because a decent lube is what i was raised using liquids or oils provide protection but my take on it is oils dry out faster than a decent lube. Like i said Im using white lithum grease for now til I find a suitable replacement.

I'm proud of my s&w m&p. At camp McCain I never had a jam. It had less than 30 rounds thru it before I took it to the shoot. Didn't lube it before the shoot. Only problem I had was the idiot that shot it (myself) laid the barrel on a sandbag and put 90 rds downrange. Melted the bag. Can anyone tell me how to get the melted plastic off my barrel?!

Re: Lube - the AR

After my first trip to knob creek I came home with a new appreciation of how to lube a gun up. I used to be very studious about lube points and not to over lube or under lube. For the most part my guns functioned. I went to knob creek and they would just run the crap out of an AR in full auto when it started smoking they would take an industrial sized spray can of lube and just hose it down, pull the bolt back and hose it down as well. Wipe off the excess and jam in another mag. I know this sounds kinda cave man ish but it worked.

Run 80 rounds through it, let it sit a minute or 10 then rub it off. After Mrs.Hammer came off the line with Capain's rifle I noticed something melted to it, after I rubbed it off I realized it was the sandbag and sand.

Does spraying a cold aerosol on a smoking hot barrel or other parts cause problems? We've all seen someone (Ok, me), put a hot piece of glass in the sink and it cracked, I know steel and glass are different but just wondering. I know they pour motor oil on a hot barrel but that's usually warmer oil.
