Interested in a new pistol. Going to be either the XD 9 tactical or the S&W M&P 9 full size. The smith feels great in my hand, probably a bit better than the xd. Never shot the smith. I have an xd 40 and love it. I just assume I'll like the xd 9. What can Yall tell me bout both of them? esp. the smith?

I've been shooting my M&P40 for the past year in USPSA matches. It's great. The (much) lower bore axis results in less muzzle flip (even though it's a 9mm, this is still important).

You can get the M&P9 in a 4" or a 5" barrel. The 5" barrel is the M&P9 Pro or the M&P9L.

You've already got an XD, so why not mix it up a little?

I have been fortunate enough to win one of each in the last few years. The XD was a regular 4" version, not the tactical, and the M&P was also the standard length version. I was very impressed by both. They both worked reliably, were accurate, had good triggers for what they were, good ergonomics, etc.

The M&P felt slightly better to me in my hand. The bore is lower as Will mentioned and I prefered it's recoil impulse, but this largely personal preference too. I put them both up for sale because I didn't really need either, with the M&P $25 higher. The XD sold and I still have the M&P.

I don't think you would go wrong with either. If you like the XD you have and want to keep everything exactly the same, do like Gunonedown suggested and go with the XD Tactical. If you want to mix things up and try something different, the M&P is no slouch. Like Will mentioned, I would personally pick up the 9L or M&P Pro as they compare more equally with the tactical.

I put them on very even ground with a Glock, and that of course is saying something. The M&P feels better to me than the Glock, and I like the metal magazines better than the metal-lined plastic Glock mags. The plastic can get scratched up and drag some while the metal tend to drop free more easily. It's all trivial stuff though as they are all very good. It is amazing how much better the choices are now than they were not that long ago. My $.02 anyway.

I really liked the feel of the m&p better than the xd, but like the xd trigger reset better. But they don't make either in a size comparable to the glock 19. :wallbash:
I've had all three and finally decided I was a glock man.

I just can't make myself like the glock. It just feels wrong in my hand. The smith and the xd feel right, with the smith holding a slight advantage as far as the feel of it. Only thing is, mags for smith are about 35 dollars or so to 25 for xd mags.

It's all about what is right to you. One small advantage for the Glock is the availability of replacement parts so you can do your own home gunsmithing (and easily replace stuff if you mess up).

I wouldn't let the price of mags sway you too much. First, M&P mags are available here for $22:

Although it looks like he is out of XD mags, I think he had them for $19.99 if I remember right and $2 per mag isn't enough to matter in my opinion. If you buy anything from Velocity Shooter, tell Tony where you are from and that Bryant Chaffin sent you. It probably won't get you anything more than a wisecrack (most likely about me), but it sure won't hurt anything!

On the triggers, there are directions online to do something to all of them yourself, but if you are not adventuresome, Dan Burwell does an awesome trigger on the M&P: http://www.burwellgunsmithing.com/

Rich Dettelhouser is one of the best with the XD:http://canyoncreekcustom.com/

and of course Charlie Vanek has been the Glock trigger guru for several years: http://www.vanekcustom.com/

Hammer,

You're more than welcome to try out my M&P before you make a decision. I'll most likely be in Jackson this weekend if you wanted to meet at the range in Byram. I know mine is a .40 but I've got some .40 loads that are loaded to 9mm power factor that would give you a pretty good idea of how it feels as well as get a chance to try the trigger.

Just shoot me a PM and we'll work something out.

I vote XD but if you would feel the XDM you might could live with the 1/2 " shorter barrel....Springers rock!! Oh and so do Croatians...
+1 just the trigger is worth it to me. If not the xdm, than the smith. The smith felt really good in the hand.
