I started on my first knife last night. We made a forge just to play around with and found some railroad spikes and started beating. It def needs more work but this is what it looks like as of now.

Perfect first forge project. I've made several and learned a lot while doing it. RR spikes are a good source of cheap practice material. Have FUN!

Thanks everyone. We are having a blast making them. It just stinks that it takes an hour of beating with a 10lb hammer to figure out what you did wrong. But we are def learning.
