I'll let u shoot my .460 and you tell me. After 5 rounds, I got a headache even wearing double hearing protection. the .500 is no slouch either with max loads. 450 Marlin and 45/70 don't have the violent recoil as the pistol cartridges do IMO.
Somebody here has the 4" .460 S&W and I'll bet she'll knock you back a bit eventhough it is compensated. Mine isn't and the concussion is something fierce.

Here is the "baddest" 500S&W Load available at this time:

The 700 gr. Hardcast LARGEST COMMERCIAL LOAD AVAILABLE. Standard loading for best accuracy and all-around knockdown power is 1200 fps with 2240 ft. lbs. of energy and a Taylor KO Factor of 60. The Taylor Factor places this between a 375 H&H Magnum and a 458 Win Mag. If you plan on shooting more than one or two of these in one session, we recommend wearing a padded shooting glove. If you are into maximum recoil and self-abuse, this is the round for you. The bottom line is - You've bought the Biggest and the Baddest Revolver out there and this will demonstrate it's MAXIMUM CAPABILITY!! This load will handle any Tyrannosaurus that may wonder into your back yard.

Muzzle velocity = 1200 fps
Muzzle energy = 2240 ft. lbs
Recoil = 64 ft. lbs.

NOTE: Due to RECOIL and destabilization, the 700 gr. bullet is not recommended for barrel lengths 4“ or shorter.

Joe, wait to you see the data and I'll bet you'll be really overwhelmed. You need to make the next M&G to fire off some off the cannons. I got a video of Bonedust(I think) shooting my 460 and its funny to see when the 460 fires vs. the 45lc loaded first and they were 1200fps, but jump to 1800-2300 in 460 big diff.

I hurt to even think about such.
Capt, can you happen on a comparison with that MAX load and the .460 vs. the 450Marlin and 45/70Gov't
Curious mind wants to know.
Took some load data from my Lyman 49th Edition and did some calculations for Taylor KO Factors. To make a valid comparison, I used a common weight bullet (300gr) for all calibers and the MAX load fps for each:

450 Marlin / 300gr @2318fps = TKOF 45
45/70Gov / 300gr @ 1692fps = TKOF 33
460S&W / 300gr @ 1966fps = TKOF 38
500S&W / *325gr @ 1952fps = TKOF 45

* Didn't have load data for a 300gr bullet

Taylor KO Factor is a commonly used mathematical approach for evaluating the stopping power of hunting cartridges. The term "KO" is an acronym for "Knock Out." The Taylor KO Factor (TKOF) is a figure of merit that allows hunters to compare bullets with respect to stopping power.
