Had a day off last Wednesday and was heading to Magnolia to meet with Captain-03, who had generously consented to provide me with an education about AR's, when word reached me that my rifle had been delivered. Stopped to get it and went on to the range. It was great timing, as I know no more about Garand's than I do AR's, but Capt's seen a few :)

Field Grade Springfield Armory, 1955 production. SA trigger group looks brand new, SA barrel 4-55, period correct stock. Didn't have a gauge, but did the bullet in the muzzle thing, and judging by some stuff I found online it should be better than a "3". Captain said it looked good, and he even scrounged up a clip of ammo so I was able to give it a small test run. I'm no rifleman , but it seemed pretty good. I've got to get it prettied-up and we'll see how she shoots.

A big  for Captain-03

That Garand looks HUNGRY........ Did you buy some CMP ammo for it...?

Lets see.... Now you need a leather sling and bayonet for it.......

HINT.... HINT.... The next Hi-Power match at Magnolia is 9/25..... You can buy CMP ammo at $5/box to shoot in the match (but only 60rds for the match).

... wondering when you were going to show her off!! You got a "good" one. Many people make reference tothe all the dings and dents in an garand stock as having a lot of character!!.. well this one just does not have much "charater"!! Stock could be original to receiver - correct markings, make, etc.

Muzzle crown looks great and trigger group looks close to new!! I acutally have several Service Grades that do not look as good as this one!! Unless I was told before hand, I would have never guessed this one to be a Field Grade ... Can't wait to hear your first range report ...

Now go out and buy a lottery ticket -- you will only need one!!

I think I've used up my luck for a while. :p

I've got a can of the Greek ammo coming...it's taking longer than the rifle!

We'll do the "black rifle" thing this weekend, then go "old school" a little later (Although I did buy a stripped lower Sunday, still not sure what upper to go with)

Variety is the spice of life, but it sure is hard on the wallet.

Nice rifle.
They have some good guns right now, and some not so good guns.
Last time I stopped at Anniston they have dozens of winchester service grades. Sloppy is the best term to describe them.

I used the gages and found a correct SA that was a .5 MW and near perfect throat. It was 1000 dollars and could not afford it.
I let an old marine take it home with him.

I saved one from being destroyed a few weeks back.

Old storm guns were being cut in half and buried.

I just couldn't let that be done to it.

It's completely seized up but other than surface rust it doesn't look that bad. A few scratches in the furniture but looks solid. Even has a good sling still attached.

I'm hoping it can be rehabed but don't know about the throat yet.
