Well, I finally got to shoot my first round of Skeet the other day. I did very well for a beginner, breaking just over 50%. I also got to shoot my first round of Trap. Very interesting and I am going to enjoy shooting both. I did about the same, maybe a little better, shooting Trap. Station 8 in skeet: Them clay's are Hauling a**!!!!

Certainly a FUN experience. When I was young - much younger - and stationed at Ft Wainwright, AK, we would go shoot at the Post Rod & Gun Club every weekend. This was my first experience with Skeet & Trap. Those were the days when you could have a gun on a military installation.

After I moved to Jackson in the 70s, a group of us would shoot at the Jackson Gun Club. That is actually why and how I got into reloading. Shotshells were not that expensive by todays standards, but, I had far less money to spend on them back then. I still have my Mec 600 Jr. reloader and it is going strong!!

jbp - Mossburg is good enough. If you are like me, a miss with a $3,000.00 or a $300.00 shotgun is still a miss and a hit is still a hit. The best shotgun I ever owned was a Stevens 77-D that cost me every bit of $75.00 NIB. I wished many times that I had never sold it.

It's still a miss. The shells you would shoot costs the same as the shells I would shoot, besides, you can shoot one of my O/U's if you want to. I'll shoot the Mossburg.

Grew up shooting skeet and trap.. If you look at my avatar that is the gun my dad bought me in 1981 when I was 10 to shoot skeet with.. It is a 28 guage citori. Still take it out every once and a while.. So spending that kind of money on a gun is not that bad when you look at it lasting you a lifetime or 2..

I always did pretty good at skeet but struggled some shooting trap. First round of skeet I ever shot I shot my Rem 870 Wingmaster 12 with a mod barrel and shot AA 9 shot skeet loads. Broke 23 out of 25. Had a couple of misses in the middle of the round but smoked both the high house and low house at sta 8. I don't suck at trap but never have been able to shoot it near as well as skeet for some reason.

Station 8 in skeet

You may have tried this already, but here's what works for me on Station 8 in skeet. Your gun should be held just off the right window of the high house & just off the left window of the low house. your eyes should be between just to the side of the barrel. When the bird comes out, swing the barrel with bird, cover the target with no lead. I don't know why, but it works. I mainly shoot trap, but shoot skeet some.

The best advice I ever got was "close is good enough". Try not to aim like shooting a rifle or handgun, and shoot with both eyes open. Ask someone how much to lead the bird and think, "lots of pellets--like 'hundreds' ".
