This National Sporting Goods Store is Closing Its Doors

St. Paul, Minnesota-based Gander Mountain Co. is currently in the process of filing for bankruptcy. The company is working with a financial advisory firm, Lighthouse Management Group, to file bankruptcy as early as this month.

The financial decision comes after Gander Mountain attempted an aggressive expansion of its stores but failed to attract new customers. To date, the sporting goods chain has roughly 160 stores, 60 of which have opened since 2012.

This announcement follows the closing of Sports Chalet, Sports Authority and Bass Pro’s purchase of Cabela’s.

It's interesting that so many stores in the same category are going under so close together. I don't know about the others, but the Gander Mountain in Hattiesburg was usually way overpriced on everything. I don't mind paying a bit extra to support local stores, but they were off the charts. Besides, I would rather support a true local store where the owners/employees might actually know something. My experience with Gander Mountain employees left a bit to be desired.

Sorry to hear this...I've always liked Gander Mountain even though I rarely went there...the nearest store is 70 +/- miles away in Hattiesburg.

They were usually well stocked in Hburg, you could look at a gun you were interested in.
Then try to find it at a better price.

I used to go to the Hattiesburg store between classes to kill time, when the long guns were still on the floor so you could handle them without supervision.

They should've changed their name to Gouger Mountain though.

I would always go to the Hattiesburg store to see what I was interested in and then go elsewhere to buy it cheaper. Just because they're filing for bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean that they're closing ALL stores.

Don't expect any going out of business sympathy for your wallet either.

The only time I would visit Gander Mountain is I would always stop at the one outside of Ocala on I-75. That's because it was a guaranteed place to find a clean restroom and a good place to stretch my legs.

As my personal policy, I don't patronize superstores like Gander, BassPro, Dicks, etc., anyway. Too impersonal and they're only interested in my wallet. They could all go out of business, and it wouldn't bother me at all.

Victory was more the by-product of a dead fad(factory chopper-ish designs) and their parent company wanting to focus on Indian.

Victory always had the best factory paintjobs though.

When their prices make bass pro seem semi reasonable, well they won't last long. At least bass pro and cabelas have fancy stores. Gander mountain in Hattiesburg reminded me of 1980s Kmart or roses..

Occasionally visit the one in Mobile, Ala. Pick up hunting gear, clothes on sale from time to time or small items gun related. Never made a special trip there. That store is also snake bit with Mobile 10 % item tax.

Bass Pro has done the major expansion thing also. If they don't fix their store inventory, pricing & staff issues they may go down this same path.
