'Necks having a Long range "Tac-ti-cool" rifle made

Bought a new Remington 700 pro-trigger action today....its never had a barrel on it

The plan is have a tactical rifle capable of shooting F-class if I ever decided to give it a try. Mostly its just gonna be a go out and have fun gun....

Here's what I've settled on

.308 caliber
Rem 700 action
McMillian stock trying to decide between the A4 and A5....adj cheek piece and adj recoil pad
28 inch barrel

barrel maker - undecided...man there are a lot of good ones out there
twist rate - I dunno yet...maybe 1:12 maybe 1:14

no muzzle break...

Nightforce bases rings and NF 5.5 x 22 - 50 scope.

Maybe some Badger Ordinance rings and bases...They are built to handle 50 BMG recoil...more than I need

Some of you F-Class types and high end rifle shooters fill me in on what you think a nice tactical rifle should have

and yes I do have a budget...I'm hoping to be able to be under 5K....2K is gone just on optics and mounts

Many Thanks for the advice

Do the 1:12 twist. the 14 will be to slow for the bullets you want to shoot in F-Class. I shoot a 1:12 28" Krieger and shoot 190 gr
SMK's' and have shot the 155's and 175's and all have shot good. I like the Kreiger barrels they are cut rifled and hand lapped. But like you said there are allot of good barrels out there. Just my $.02.

Re: 'Necks having a Long range "Tac-ti-cool" rifle made

Couple folks at work have new rifles...One a Savage Model 12 with varmit stock..its 1:12 twist Bushnell Elite 4200

The other is a Rem 700 40-x with a 1:14 twist..with a NF 5.5 x 22-50 (probably what I'll end up with)

Both owners seem to like 42 Gr RL 15 on a 168 Sierra Match king right now...both guns shot so well last weekend I could not believe my eyes

I got the fever bad...so I went ahead and bought the action...my head hurts on the rest of the stuff

Neck,
If I were building a .308 Win… I’d spec out a reamer from PT&G to match the new Lapua .308 Palma case with something like a .334” or .335” neck to be sure I got perfect necks.
You don’t need Badger Ord. STEEL Rings and bases. Aluminum anything will be 1/3 the weight. Something like Ken Farrell Aluminum Rings and AL 20 MOA 2 piece bases would be better. If you’re going to run a McMillan A anything w/ the Adjustable Cheek and Butt it will be heavy and w/ a 28” tube of any mass you will be hard pressed to make the 18 something weight limit for F-TR! Your NXS weights right at 2 lbs. by itself. I would cut weight everywhere I could to be able to run a 28”-30” tube with a muzzle dia. of at least .940”.
Barrels would depend on your taste, Cut or Button. You can get a lemon from any of them and none are any better than the other. 12" twist would be the slowest I'd try in .308 Win.. I’ve got 2 Broughtons and 3 Kriegers. They all shoot well. It really depends on WHO is putting it together. Brux Barrels are the sleeper!
I also would nix the Remington trigger by selling it on 6mmbr for $60.00 and buy a Jewell Model HVRTSBR-A for $203.00 delivered from Larry Scott http://www.greatscottshooters.com/trigger.htm

Thx for info...Broughton...that's the barrel maker I was studying on today...was kicking around the 30 inch tube...kinda settled on a 28...with a 30 it would be a beast...it would give me some extra length when it can time to "re-barrel" I could just a a few inches near the chamber removed and start over...stainless or blued or just personal preference?

Buy a new Rem 700 action and the first thing to do is throw the trigger away...

Gotta love it

I'm having a Jewell trigger put in my .260 Remington build with Shien barrel

Go Stainless. Most of them do not require much finish work to polish.
Don't throw thow the trigger away, thats 60 towards the Jewell. That Jewell will go from 4# to 1.5 oz. My target rifles range from 3-8 oz... The Remington trigger will at best go to 1.5# safely.
Good luck and have fun w/ it

The Small Primer pocket of the .308 Palma case will allow you to run higher chamber pressures with out the risk of loosening the pocket. More meat around the primer. That is how the 6x47 can out run the .243 Win. with 105 class bullets with considerably less powder. For that matter the 6 Dasher will run right there with the .243 Win w/ a 105 with about 12 grains less powder. The .308 Palma would make an mean .260 Improved. I think it is just a little much for the 6mm bore.

Yes you can make .260 Rem cases from .308 Win... The Distance from the Case head to the NK/Shoulder junction of the .260 is 1.7797" the .308 Win. is 1.714" That is a difference of .0657" All you would have to do is Neck down the entire .308 NK to 7mm then neck down the Neck to 6.5mm stoping short, just enough to create a false shoulder. Load w/ 12 grains of pistol powder, Cream of Wheat topped off w/ 1/4 sheet of Toilet paper. Pull the trigger and now it's a .260".
This will result in a 6.5x47 Lapua with .229" more boiler room!

We do a similar think with the 6mmBR case to make Dasher cases. Necking them up to 6.5mm then back to 6mm stopping short making the false shoulder. Nothing to it!

The "false shoulder" way of fireforming was a bit of a pain to learn for my BRX. it should be pretty easy to do with the 308. I was pondering how my 260 would shoot with a magnum small rifle primer and 308palma brass. Never know till u try it I guess.
