Hey Captain.... It is fairly easy...........

Say you find a "pewter" mug or plate. If you can bend it without GREAT effort, you have REAL pewter. Faux pewter contains aluminum and you will have a HARD time trying to bend faux pewter.

Another test........ Try melting faux pewter in your smelting pot.... You can't do it. The melting temp is WAY TOO high.

If you find some REAL pewter......... Please keep me in mind....

Every metal has a distinct density. you could do a water displacement test. subtract 8% of the displacement for crap metals in pewter and the number you get should be 6-7 (g/mL) if its higher than that i would suspect high lead content, lower than that its high aluminum

Beladran...... Two things..............

First, with the Dove Hunt offer...... You just MADE MY DAY...... Thanks.

Second, I understand your water displacement method of trying to determine a metal, but I think the "bend test" for pewter is easier.....
Plus, you left out the hard part of the water displacement test...... Knowing the exact volume of the test metal..........

Forget the pewter. I add solder that is 95% TIN and 5% Antimony. You can easily find it in any hardware store and it melts very easily. You only need to add a few inches of solder to you mix for excellent bullets. I flux mine with caranuba wax after I add the solder, works good and smells great!!
