Decided to keep the Springfield and get the Rock Island Tactical. Birthday present from my brother. Just need to change the grips.

Nice Rock! Yea they do put some homely looking grips on them. I took the grips off my RIA TACTICAL and stripped them down and rubbed 8 coats of TRU OIL on them. They arn't orange anymore. they look like glossy walnut now. Can't quite drop the coin for nice grips yet.

:lol3: That question is gonna open up a big ol'can of worms. Both are good pistols, the finish on the Springfield is a little better sometimes. The Springfield is made in Brazil and the Rock is made in the Philippines, both have MIM parts which some people don't like, but there nothing wrong with MIM parts almost everything has MIM parts in it.(cars, medical equipment etc) so that's no biggie IMO because they are easily and cheaply replacable if you should want to. The Rock cost less most of the time, I always heard of these mythical $400 Springfield GIs on the 1911 forums but have never seen one that wasn't $500+.

Springfield holds it's value better...but honestly/personally....I'd rather have a RIA unless I was getting one of springer's decked out models like the TRP

Yea, I thought about that after I wrote it.

I always heard of these mythical $400 Springfield GIs on the 1911 forums but have never seen one that wasn't $500+.

That is the price I have seen most of the time.

RIA tactical over Springer GI. Better sights, if nothing else.

Now...back to Tankers nice new toy. Some grips will help for sure. I got some nice cocobolos off Ebay for about $26. shipped. Had to notch'em for the Ambi...no big deal. Also check out CDNN or Cheaper than Dirt, I forget which. Usually a good deal or two.

Very nice. I bought a RIA 1911 a week or so ago. Just the regular 1911A1 though.
