Having just graduated college I can finally afford to drop money on a decent gun of my own. I'm leaning towards a 1911 .45 as I liked the weight of the last one I shot in my hand, but am open to anyone's input on what would be the best to pick up. I'm wanting a handgun with a bit of ass behind it, but not anything that break the bank too hard. I'm looking forward to absorbing some of the knowledge you guys have to offer!

Welcome to the group.

Nobody can tell you which handgun is the best for you...that is a decision you have to make for yourself. A lot of the decision will decide on what you find most comfortable to handle and shoot. Take time to visit a lot of shops and hold a lot of guns. Some consideration needs to be given to how you plan to use it...the same gun might not be the best to sit by the bed and the best to carry on your hip.

The regulars on this site have a lot of favorites from Glocks to 1911's and everything in between...and there are even some oddballs like me who love revolvers! My EDC gun is most often a Charter .44 Special with a 2.5" barrel, but a couple of days last week I carried a stainless 1911 clone just 'cause I wanted to. Have fun, the search can be 3/4 of the fun! ;)

Welcome. If you can go to the range with some of the guys on the forum; I am sure someone on the forum would let you shoot two or more different pistols. I would recommend starting out with a revolver. But you might want to start out with a 9mm before going to the 1911. The 1911 is a great pistol. If you want to shoot a lot of rounds, the 9mm is the cheapest ammo now.
I believe that it is better to start out with a smaller caliber, get really good with it before going up to a bigger. But it is your choice.

Depends on what frills you want such as night sights, ambi safety, etc and the size of your budget. There are a few low end guns that are decent and reliable, Rock Island Armory for example ; a bunch in the middle like Ruger and Remington ; and several high end like Les Baer or Wilson Combat.

But if you've never owned a 1911, I don't recommend buying a high end. Wait until you get familiar with 1911's and know what extras you want.

And there are always used available.

If it ain't a Colt... it's a copy... :)

And Springfield Armory M1911 pistols deserve worthy mention too. Not all the others have a forged steel frame and slide like those from Springfield in Geneseo, Illinois... just saying...

Yes, Colt and Springfield deserve mentioning, as do others. I just didn't feel like making that long of a list.
