New Army Rifle Gives Squads the Ability To Reach Out and Touch Bad Guys

The M110 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle will be rolled out soon after being deemed fit for soldiers, according to the Army.

Chambered in 7.62, the M110 will provide operators with the ability to project power in a way the standard 5.56 round simply can’t.

With a range of 800 meters, the rifle is more than capable of reaching out and touching anyone intent on doing harm to America.

The rifle, manufactured by Heckler & Koch, is a variant of a design based on the AR-15 platform. This means soldiers who already have experience on the Army’s M4 carbine should have an easy time adjusting to the magazine-fed rifle.

Topping the rifle will be a variable 6x magnification Sig Sauer scope, according to a news release from the company.

In addition to the M4 carbine and M249 machine gun, this will allow soldiers to be more flexible in a number of ways.

For one, the rifle’s heavier rounds mean its shots are more predictable at long range. Coupled with the standard riflescope, this means any bad guy wanting to challenge an Army squad in its range is going to have a rough time.

The more powerful 7.62 round also gives the rifle more lethality and the ability to punch through cover that the 5.56 round might not be able to.

They must be referring to the M110 CSASS as the M110 has been in use for several years and was made by KAC

That being said, the fact they are upgrading the equipment the provide to our troops is a great thing.
Except for the scope, bipod and pistol grip it's just a 4lb heavier M-14. Actually replaces the M-39, which is a variant of the M-14.

Yes, the Knights Armament M110 is a nice rifle to say the least. I saw a few back in the day, some were unfired as well.

Gee, looks like my Lewis Machine LM308MWS
Well it’s essentially just a well built AR/LR10 in 308. I’m sure they would say there are some big changes but I don’t see them. One thing I found interesting is they said they KAC m110 had a steel receiver and the HK used aluminum to save weight. WTH why would you use steel when 308 ars have used aluminum for decades.

Heckler & Koch Grabs $33 Million Army Sniper, Marksman Rifle Award

HK stands to bank up to $33.5 million on precision rifles, such as these new M110A1 CSASS platforms, for the U.S. Army over the next couple of years. (Photo: U.S. Army)

The U.S. Army Contracting Command on Wednesday announced a contract award to Hecker & Koch worth over $33 million.

The Ashburn, Virginia-based company was awarded a $33.5 modification to contracts for the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System and the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle.

The CSASS, classified by the Army as the M110A1 rifle, is a variant of the company’s G28 (HK241) platform chambered in 7.62 NATO. The rifle, which itself is a development of the HK417 series, was first green-lighted by Uncle in 2016.

Article touching on G36 problems:
Heckler & Koch G36: the rifle held in all the wrong places | DW | 23.04.2015
The (poor) English translation uses the term "barrel holder" for "breech block" but you can understand what a disaster this rifle is.
The G3 was at least as reliable, if not more than reliable than the AK series, and more accurate than the AK series (but not that accurate, due to the sheet metal receiver), but not very ergonomic. As one Oberstleutnant told me while we were firing them at a range outside of Munich, with a group of Reservisten:
"Das G3 ist ein Wunder der deutschen Waffentechnologie und Ingenieurwissenschaft. Leider ist es nicht für Menschen geeignet." The G3 is a miracle of German weapons technology and engineering. Unfortunately it was not designed for use by humans.
I laughed so hard I almost spilled my beer.

Seems to me that these guys just keep reinventing the wheel for lucrative contracts and fails to mention how many to be produced. Iam ALL for "our boys" our Children having the best offense and defense we could afford them but all I'am seeing is alot of fat.

Do you normally drink while at the range? Lol
In all seriousness,
The Bundeswehr and Bund der Militär- und Polizeischützen e.V. are fastidious about safety. All rifle firing is at prone, 300m, on a baffled outdoor range. Only offhand firing we did was with the awful P1 (postwar P38 with about a 30lb DA trigger). All rounds / brass counted before and after each stage. All firearms in locked cases then locked up in the armory prior to retreat to the wood-paneled bar for Bier und Wurst.
