New "Baby" in the House

I just received a phone message from FedEx that they would be delivering a "Winchester Garand" NLT 10:30 tomorrow. There has to be someone over 21 years of age with a government ID to sign for the package. Only took about 3 weeks from the time that I sent in my paperwork. Now I've got to find myself some brass to reload. I've already checked out all of the places around here and nobody has 06 brass. I already have some Varget and a bunch of Sierra, Speer, and Hornady 168 grain bullets to load. I've got to find some IMR 4895. I'll use Doug's load using IMR 4895 and I have to find a load for the Varget. I already have a "Designated Trigger Puller" (JBPMidas) to help me sight in and find the right load for the rifle.

CPT, you're gonna have to clue me in on where to look for SA markings on the barrel.
Pull the operating rod all the way to the back .... here is a picture of what it should look like ...

This is a SA -- 11 54 (November 1954)

BTW: Brass is on the way!

Re: New "Baby" in the House

CPT - I remembered where the markings were from my ROTC days at Southern after I looked the rifle over good. There's no month stamp but the year stamp is 65.

Shoe - It's a Service grade G3.
Re: New "Baby" in the House

'65 -- I would say it is a NEW barrel .... we have not used them things very much since '65!! No records of those sent to 'Nam ever being returned!!
Re: New "Baby" in the House

 Nice M-1 :10: . I know you will really enjoy it. I wish I could gather the funds to get a Winchester Garand. Guess I'll have to make do with my two Springfields :lol4: . Congrats on the "new baby".

Stealing my own post. Anybody got an extra Garand gas plug wrench I can purchase?

Re: New "Baby" in the House

Shooting the Garand this morning brought back many memories of "days gone by" for me. The first M1 I ever handled was in the early '60's when I was in ROTC at Southern.
Didn't get to shoot one until I joined the MS National Guard in late "64. It was the first high powered rifle I ever shot. There have been well over a million rounds sent down range through the barrels of the different guns I have fired over the years, with more still to be sent. Got to shoot the M1D's during my military career. Had to do sniper and anti-sniper qualification for our units riot control mission. Didn't like the scope on the M1D. It was a 1x4 power and was just about useless as far as being mounted on the M1D. That power scope didn't do the "D" model justice. They were very accurate rifles.

Re: New "Baby" in the House

I guess that "the luck of the draw" was very much in my favor. I've read on another forum where people that had ordered their Win Garands were getting barrels that didn't gauge anywhere near what mine gauged at. I feel very lucky. Shooting off a sand bag at 100 yards yesterday, in the wind, I shot 3" and under 8 shot groups. Going again in the morning to try some more loads. The loads I shot yesterday were Mil cases, 46 gr IMR 4895 with 168 gr Sierra MK bullets. They did very well. I don't think I'll go up to Doug's load on this one, in fact I may drop it down .5 grains to reduce the recoil slightly. Still, at 46 grains, the recoil was "shootable" for an old man like me.

I like that "ping - ping - ping - ping"
Re: New "Baby" in the House

Can't wait t shoot it again!

When 'Neck and I were at the South Store last week, we saw several Winchester SGs in the condition you received; however, we saw some real "dogs" there also ... you did well!!

Yesterday morning at the range "baby" did good. This group was fired from sandbags at 100 yards. The load was as follows: Mil cases, Rem 9 1/2 LR primers, 168 gr Sierra MK, and 46.0 grs of IMR 4895 powder. No wind.

Re: New "Baby" in the House

Did you sneeze on that one to the left or what?
Re: New "Baby" in the House

I know -- that one to the left was the "cold bore" shot, right? I, too, like that load!! Great shooting with a WWII rifle!!
