Building another 300 whisper!

After talking to a smith buddy of mine in colorado we have decided that a 1-10 twist is optimal for 220 and under projectiles. Since I have a kreiger .308 blank ready to roll, a howa 1500 223 action, and boyds stock. Should be a nice little rifle, blued reciver, stainless #8 contour ceramic coated black, threaded 5/8x24tpi for my suppressor,green/tan laminate stock. Going to see about the cdi bottom metal that uses 223 aics mags also for future use.

What is the attraction to a 300 whisper? Why not build a .308 and work up some sub-sonic loads for it to use with your can. Then you have a rifle with different loads that is capable for longer range shots than the whisper will ever give you.

Well, the case is made for sub/supersonic use, subs with trailboss is ok in 308 win, "been there did that years ago" but you will not get a decent fps spread, mabye 25-50 fps if lucky. the whisper is designed around this. Also I have a sbr ar upper and have had a few bolt guns in this also, sold them because remington 700 action sucks for this round and is the reason I am going with a howa. Also forgot to mention, cause I can :)

What ever trips your trigger. Just haven't been able to understand what the attraction is. Have a friend whose got a boner for the whisper but watching him make trip after trip to the range playing with loads to get a sub load in a AR to cycle left me scratching my head.

never had a problem with my ar cycling, second load i made was gtg for my setup. I pefer a bolt gun and have a custom 308 built and shoot subs out of it on occasion but it never has nor will work as well as a whisper since it was designed around bieng subsonic, however it shoots real nice with super sonics also in the 155-175 range . Another issue with a dual use 308 is that with a 20" barrel you are going to have more problems with fps variation and with a 16" or less your supersonic ammo will be alot louder when suppressed.

that and the fact that with a 20" or longer tube if you arenot pushing the round in 1030fps or faster your round has a greater chance of getting stuck in your bore. belive me when i have seen bullets hainging out the end of a muzzle and rounds stuck midway down the bore. pics are online if you search, and there is nothing worse than ruining a 250 blank and a 200 dollar chamber/thread job over a pennys worth of powder!

this is why when you work up a subsonic load you work high to low with a chronograph.
