The Kimber "Custom Shop" gets widely maligned on the internet (by non-Kimber folks, usually) because Kimber is fairly liberal in their use of the term "Custom Shop" on their firearms. While Springfield generally reserves that title for some of their nicest iron, Kimber will brand every CDP, etc. with the logo.
I think Kimber's line generally delivers great value for the price point, but am not so much a fanboy that I think they're the be-all, end-all of 1911 manufacturers. Their status as the #1 producer of production 1911 pistols also has the baggage of having the most complaints, which makes sense to me. My guess is that, given the opportunity, the other production 1911 makers would gladly swap places with Kimber.
