Saw something similar to this in a YouTube video. The saw horses have 5' legs and fold up. The hanger board is 6'6" long with 6" off each end dedicated to the saw horse clamp. There is room on this hanger for 4-5 targets to have ~ 6" between them. I'll be hanging 2 of the 8" gongs (as seen in picture 1) on either end using the hooks shown. I will hang a 6" gong and a 4" gong from 8" Eye-Screws with the eyelet opened up into a hook, screwed into the bottom of the 2x4, so that the smaller diameter gongs will hang a bit lower. More pics to follow, but lower back pain is keeping me from getting much done. Obviously, this could have been built for considerably cheaper if I hadn't had to buy lumber. The hardware was only ~$20 bucks. I've decided to try this type of hanger system rather than the chains I had been using because the chains allow for too much swing, often sending the smaller gongs sailing up and over the old hanger system. I'm sure this'll get shot all to pieces, but it's portable and easily replaceable.

The clamps should be screwed to 2x4s or the frame can rock and come apart. I know from experience....... Mainly with larger gongs and chains.

Just a few cheap sheetrock screws is all it takes.

.
Screwed to the horse legs or screwed to the cross member? The clamps are currently nailed to the horse legs.

You can build just about anything with sheetrock screws. I also like the zinc coated deck screws.
It is time for me to buy a couple pounds. And washers, I always need them for projects.

If nailed to legs, then just screw to cross member.

.
Hmmm. I foresee a problem with portability if securing the horses to the crossmember. I also see the issue with the frame rocking amd coming apart. Maybe a thumb screw and a couple of T-nuts? Frame needs to be quick to assemble and disassemble.

I’m considering making a second frame like the one I'm building now, only constructing it of treated lumber. That way I could leave it at the range and not be worried about the weather destroying it. Other people maybe, but not the weather. Will have to see if that would be ok. Could be easily stored out of the way without needing any of the club’s buildings being opened up. I have been hanging my targets from chains looped over the current 100 yard target system (which is 2x4’s run along the tops of 4x4 posts). But the targets often get thrown back and wrapped around the hanger forcing me to walk the line to fix them. Not ideal.

That is why I say screws and not nails. I take a battery powered drill with me to the range. For the record, my setup like yours is much taller. Mine looks more like a swing-set than a sawhorse. And I was using large gongs hanging with chains. Your setup without chains might not try to swing at all.

I suggest you do field testing before advertising.........

Wasn't advertising, just sharing. Not planning to offer these for sell. But yes, some field testing will be required to work out the bugs. I think I'll try to come up with a tool-less solution to secure the legs to the hanger. I try not to leave things, especially tools, locked in my truck if I can help it and am afraid I'd walk off and leave any kind of driver at home.

Sorry. My bad ! ! ! I had it in my limited pea-brain that you were selling the stands.

.
No worries. After re-reading my OP I can see how one could come away thinking that. But no, not selling them. Just saw it elsewhere and thought I'd give the setup a try and figured others here might want to as well.

EDIT: I've edited the Thread Title to make it less like an advertisement. Don't want people getting the wrong idea. :)

Finally finished my target hanger (adulting sucks). Going to shoot it up this afternoon after our Vintage Pistol (Bullseye) Match at sW Gun Club this morning. I’ll deliver a range report on its effectiveness later today. You’ll notice I’ve left one space open. Intend to hand a 10” gong there once I find time to order one.

Nice.

If shooting with a rifle, based on my experience trying the saw horse brackets, you’ll need a larger leg spread (that’s what she said) than they give for the larger gong. The pendulum effect from repeated shots will probably cause this one to rock over if you shot the plate while its still swinging towards the rear.
