A friend of my wife wants to buy a handgun and get a carry permit. She has never fired a handgun in her life. She wants me to take her shooting and she knows she wants a Semi Auto. I was thinking of taking her to Surplus City so she can rent and shoot several different types of handguns. I know they have plenty of Glocks and some 1911's to rent. Dont know about revolvers. She has no shortage of cash so she can pretty much get any gun she wants. She is 5'5 and average build with medium-small hands. Recomendations? Recomendations on what she should do first? I know a gun safety/handling class is a must.

How can she really know what she want if she's never shot a handgun before? 1st thing to do would be to call cliff cargill take his course than she will have a better understanding of what she needs.

Some women have a hard time cocking a semi-auto, but that can be overcome by proper teaching and practice.

I say 9mm MAX........ What about a small frame Glock (not sure of the model number). Very safe to carry, rugged, holds many rounds......

let her try everything she can get her hands on and then suggest that she go with the largest caliber she can handle and still enjoys shooting.

designating calibers as "not for women" seems kind of silly to me since I have heard of alot (and seen one) of women shoot .357s and .45s with no problem...once you remove the stigma you can really get down to brass tacks and see what works for her

The Kahr PM9 might be a good choice provided that she can rack it. I wouldn't rule out a good 38 snubbie either
My wife can just barely rack the slide on some of my semi-auto's. Some she can't at all. She has a Walther P22 that she shoots more then anything, then a 38 revo that has been slicked out real nice.

My mom use to have a Beretta with a "tip-up" barrel you never had to rack it. Not sure what all calibers it comes in. Course I like the wheel guns. They are easy to understand, and easy to shoot...and bestly.. fun fun fun.

my girlfriend (who is pregnant) shoot her first pistol saturday a mark III .22 then turned right around and wraped her hands around my glock 21 .45 she loved both
I'm no doctor but I don't think the sound is good for the baby. My wife is pregnant with our second child and our doctor said NO shooting. Be careful.

I am going to throw in an oddball here. If she really wants a semi then the Bersa 380 is a great shooter and has mild recoil and about the right size for her... I am a huge revolver fan, but the think I like about my Semi autos is that I know my 5 YO cant rack the slide. They are just a little safter when kids are around than a Revolver in case they get thier hands on it.

I'd highly recommend something commonly available, reasonable in price, easy to maintain, lightweight, easy to shoot and reliable. A used Glock 19 in 9mm. Stay away from the 1911 for now, it's heavy, complicated and bulky. There's a reason a multitude of US LEO's have transitioned to the Glock over the old standby the revolver. If you look hard enough you can probably find a used G19 for around $400 and maybe less. They just don't wear out...

Best advise ... ever. I do not want to read about her in the paper ..... no experience at ALL with anytype gun and carrying - well that is her right - but maybe not the best thing to be doing ..... if she has the money (which you say she does), get the training of a professional - BEFORE she goes and buys any gun ... Sorry, but I feel strongly about this ...
