NRA Awards Grant To Mississippi Sheriff's Office For AR-15s

The NRA believes in standing behind the thin blue line by supporting law enforcement officers through many programs. In September, Jones County Sheriff Department in Mississippi received a $3,400 grant from NRA in order to retire old rifles used by the SWAT Team and Narcotics division, and replace them with two fully suppressed AR-15s. The new firearms will allow the deputies to be better equipped for the different situations they encounter on patrol.

“Us having these rifles on every unit in the county is so important because precious seconds count whenever someone turns loose on one our people or a citizen with a high-powered assault rifle,” said Sheriff Alex Hodge in a Sept. 25 press conference.

The two suppressed Colt AR-15 rifles are intended to help deputies better identify the types of gunfire they may hear in situations as either “friendly” or “threat.” Because they are suppressed, the deputies will also be able to worry less about hearing loss over time.

Humpty Dumpty is a very light way to put it.
From what I have heard from people who have dealt with him, and from the incident where a jones county deputy was shot a few years ago I really would’ve liked for another agency to have received the gift.

Don't know anything about this sheriff, but I do know many sheriffs and police chiefs feel the 2nd A only applies to us civilians having only old single shot hunting rifles and shotguns.

I'm going to have to step in on this one. I've know said sheriff most of my life. Been a member of the same church for a long time. He's upstanding and I'm glad to know him and have him in that position. We have discussed guns in the past and when I would take him my suppressor forms to sign he'd always ask what I was getting now.
So unless have personal experience would like to share, then let's please leave out all the he said she said.
And him using the phrase "assault rifle" in that context would be correct if were firing on his innocent deputies or me for that matter.
My county isn't perfect but I love it and will stand up for it. It sure could be a lot worse. And have many friends that don the uniform here in the county as well as in town.
And thought I read that the new rifles were going to the SWAT members and their older rifles handed down to the patrol officers.

Thanks for your personal insight. I just wished your sheriff had left it at "high-powered rifles." JMO.

And yes, the new NRA AR's were to be going to the sheriff's office SWAT team.

"whenever someone turns loose on one our people or a citizen with a high-powered assault rifle"

How many times has this happened in Jones County in the past 5 years?
I know I can think of one.

Another standoff resulting in shootout (just up the road from my house-shotgun/handgun was involved), and then a standoff/gunfight involving officers from Laurel in another county that resulted in death/GSWs. Though no details about weapon used so assume was not a HPAR.

Maybe the Jones County, MS sheriff's office applied for this NRA grant and was approved for it?
Without reading the article I feel certain this was a grant approved in committee last March. It comes from The Friends of NRA Grant process. We scrutinize these request with a fine tooth comb before approving them. A lot depends on who writes the grant request.
