Guys,

I don't know whom else here has run into this but everytime I put a firearm into pawn or buy another new weapon, I have a three day waiting period. While I understand, my social is from out of State, I've lived in MS for over sixteen years. What's the thing with that? Does anybody else run into this or is this just a "me" deal. A tip, I'm from South Dakota and I'm former military if it makes a difference.

Can someone explain this one?

Never had a wait. You got a MS carry permit? Never known anyone who had to wait. What kind of laws SD have for buying? That could be the bottleneck, they want to do their own background. You owe anybody money up there? JK but think about any questions that may impact SD's response although I can't see why they'd even be questioned since they check federal criminal history which would of course be from every state you ever lived in. Call the ATF and let them run one (if they would).

Two ways around that; get a carry permit or a UPIN from the ATF. Your dealer can provide you with the paperwork for the UPIN. Fill it out, get a set of fingerprints from a local law enforcement agency and sit back for the wait. The next time you buy the UPIN gets you approved or the carry permit voids the call.

Yes. I have lived in Mississippi all my life and never, ever had anything that would trigger any question about my legal ability to purchase a gun. I am, and always have been squeaky clean.

And yet every time I would buy a gun from a dealer, they would get a "hold" on my clearance.

Invariably, they would get a call back that I was clear, but if I was at a gun show such a delay essentially killed the deal.

I kept trying to find out what the issue was. Word was that a bad guy with a Social Security Number or name similar to mine could do that.

I never did it, but under the Code of Federal Regulations that set up the instant background checks, there is a procedure to find out: You must commit to buying a gun. Get the FFL dealer who makes the phone call give you the transaction number he gets over the phone (makes no difference whether you get approved or not).

Then you must write the FBI (as I recall---the proper name and address are in the regulations) with that transaction number and ask what the deal is.

Supposedly you will eventually find out why you are getting the delay.

But, see, that won't change anything. You'll still get the delay---but you'll know why.

I got tired of all the delays and just got a CCW permit. There is no phone call; no background check. You fill out the purchase form and give them money and show your CCW permit and walk away with the gun of your choice.

ETA: I also figured that writing them would get me put on some "other" lists and simply add to my delays.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I've never been turned down for a firearm, just put on a 72 hold. Never made any sense to me why MS would make me wait three days, then turn my toys over to me. This never happened when I lived in Memphis or in IL, just here. Heck, with the number of rifles and handguns I've bought since I came here, I figure the State oughta have a file on me thick as a phone book by now.

I am always on a 5 day hold. The only thing I can figure is because I have a file in the FBI because of my Security Clearence.

TS Clearance, 3 Same 1st and Last name in 1/4 mile, i'm a Jr, etc...I got used to it. moved to MS, 3rd gun got proceed. 15min call dealer to NCIC. CC in April. Wait due to MDPS not recognizing AL permit.

I am also from out of state, Maryland, with a MD SSN and retired Military, same as you. I have purchased 23 guns in the last 6 months and never had to wait.

Well, DeSoto, guess I can't complain too much then. Outside of a couple altercations resulting in "Office Hours" discipline in the Corps, my civilian record is as clean as it can be. Maybe it's just a thing with some of us. Ah well, you other fellas have got me started on the track to get all this cleared up, so it shouldn't be too long before I'm GTG here.
