I just read that the Olin ammunition plant in moving production to Oxford, MS. This should bring about 800 jobs to the area.

Olin makes ammunition for the US Government and also markets it products under the Winchester brand.

Great news.

Isn't there an ammo plant around Tupelo too?

Olin asked it's union members to take a cut to keep the plant open. When the members said no, Olin announced it was closing shop and moving to Oxford. We welcome Olin to our state!

Guys I supply the Olin-Winchester plant now with all of their tools, cutting tools, machining stuff, bolts, nuts, etc. I am in the plant 4-5 days a week, there will be around 1000 new jobs added, all of the centerfire and shotgun ammo will be down here eventually. There is a year left in their contract up north but they have already started moving stuff down already they had a train bringing in training supplies today for the new people. As of now the plant here makes all of the rimfire ammo, they make all of the blank rounds that are used in training guns and for ramset, plus they make some of the military ammo and all of the military ammo is shipped out of the plant here in Oxford.

Winchester has been making .22's there in the old Whirlpool plant for a few years. This is their centerfire operation!

Incorrect, the whirlpool plant has been sitting empty since it closed. Winchester has their own plant up here.

I know ALL the details as I am friends with the plant manager and a lot of the staff so I know all the inside scoop. Oh and the idiots up north in the union voted not once, but TWICE to lose their jobs, they thought that Olin was bluffing and wouldn't move down here.

I find that quite hilarious. Nobody ever wants a pay cut but I be they still would've been making pretty decent money all things considered.

In the end, $.01 > No dollar.

Here is an article on it: http://www.stltoday.com/business/article_ebcde769-54bc-5031-b4d5-e19fda6d770b.html

I really not sure how I feel about it all. Am I glad an industry is re-locating to MS? sure! Am I glad they are doing it because they see us as cheap non-union labor that can be paid ultra-low wages .. not really.. Am I gald that the state of MS gave them my $25,000,000 to do it... again.. not really. Hey if the state will give me $25,000,000 I could probably create 1000 jobs for a long while just on the money they gave me!

I agree. However, I suppose we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. 1000 jobs in the Oxford area is a big deal.:)

I knew about the .22 plant move and am excited about the certerfire move.

I visit Oxford some and have driven around a bit wondering where the plant is. Is it north of town in the old industrial park (where I think Lawn Boy used to make engines)?

Or maybe south just off Highway 7 in that old industrial park?

I will never understand why gun manufacturers hang around in New England states where they are not welcome when they could move South and be adored.

My long term fear is that as the South gets more and more industry, we will eventually get powerful unions and eventually we will end up where the rust belt is now.

The plant is located right off of Highway 7, when your pass the Molly Barr/New Albany exit on Highway 7 going towards Memphis you go about 2 miles and there is a big road that goes left with a turn lane and it's about a mile down there. It's right by the Caterpillar plant. Also, if you take North Lamar from the square it runs right next to it as well.

All of the big ammo manufacturers are now union free and in the south, they are in arkansas, texas, and mississippi. I agree that 1000 jobs in Oxford is a huge deal.

Pinetor, I know quite a few guys that work at the Winchester plant here, they DO NOT make super low wages. Your making it sound kinda like were paying people in Mexico or Asia $1 an hour to do the work. There will be a line a mile long of people wanting these jobs, the people who worked up North in the union get paid WAYYYYYY too much for what they do. I know specific figures on what they make up there and down here. They get paid appropriately down here they get paid too much up there.

The machinist union up north won't allow them to outsource ANYTHING, it all has to be made in house by their machinists. They have a ton of machinists who are getting paid outrageous amounts to take their time making parts that could be outsourced and made for a fraction of the price in half the time. The head of the machine shop here is a buddy of mine and so are all of the machinists, we go out and shoot and hunt together all the time. He outsources a ton of stuff to local tool and die companies and gives work to a lot of smaller shops instead of being stingy and insisting they make it all themselves. They are all happy with what they make, plus they have AWESOME benefits, the health insurance they get is top notch...plus they get other perks like super cheap ammo :machinegun:
