My cousin-in law called me asking what's a good .308 ar to get. He's got a 6.8 bushmaster right now and is not to please with it. What's a good .308 model to get? He said he went and look at an armalight and said it felt loose like his bush. They also had a Rock River for 100 more that he said he liked but it didn't have a collaspeable stock on it which he also wants. Would his best bet be to get the RR and change the stock out? Or are there some other brands out there that would be pretty good?

Thanks,

I have been debating this issue myself for quite a while. The one thing that needs to be kept in mind is that, unlike the AR15 platform, you cannot mix and match uppers and lowers from different manufacturers. This is the thing that has caused me the most pause along with the availability/cost of mags for the varying models. If he thinks that he may want more than one upper, he should look around and see what will be available in terms of the different brands. DPMS has a wider variety but I read of more issues with them. The issues seem to all be mag related and fixable but present nevertheless. So far, I am partial to the Rock River but haven't been able to make up my mind on whether I want to go the .308 AR route or save up my pennies for an FN SCAR 17s. Good luck with the hunt...

I almost picked up a DPMS at the last H-burg gun show..... several bbl lengths, bbl weights, upper designs (rail, sights, no-sights, handle, etc. ) I personally like the heavy long bbl.... But trying to weigh the issues with 308 "black" guns versus the Remington R25..... now that the R25 is <$1300, I may try it......my :2c:

I've had a DPMS LR-AP4 (.308 / 7.62 NATO) for almost a year now. Fired 200-300 rounds through it without issue. I am new to the AR platform so I can not give you an "expert" opinion or compare it to others, but my brother-in-law spent 20 years in military security and "really likes it". I bought mine locally from Mike Smith at Smith's speed shop. He seems to get a steady supply of DPMS rifles that may take others months to get. Good luck!

Son got a Lewis Machine Tools AR10, finest rifle I ever shot on the AR platform. Only AR he didn't build himself. They're high but they are extremely well built. He said if the SHTF, that'd be the rifle he grabbed first. Nice to get that tax free money but I guess living in a sandbox you earned it. They got 2800 on the price tag.

I don't own any .308 AR's but have been seriously considering buying one.

I've been leaning toward the Rock River 20" barrel flat-top. I think the main thing the RR has going for it is that it uses FAL mags. I've already got an Entreprise STG-58 FAL-type rifle and I've got a butt-ton of mags for it, so that helps with supply problems.

All the other AR-10-type rifles use proprietary mags that are quite pricey compared to FAL mags. I know there are aftermarket mags available for the DPMS, but they've not been around long enough yet to gain my trust as to their reliability. I know Pro-Mag is making some, but I've had a lot of issues with Pro-Mags in the past. They make great AR-15 mags, but their Mini-14 mags are for sh*t. They were also the ones who introduced those large capacity drum-type mags for the 1911 which reportedly won't feed reliably for more than 2 or 3 rounds at a time. I know every site I've gone to that sells gun accessories have always had those 1911 drums on clearance sale, apparently to put shed of them - Midway, Grafs, Natchez, Bass Pro, etc.

JMHO......

most of the fail mag AR 10s have problems
the ar10 with stoner mags are the best and the original design which is what DPMS uses.
If you insist on fail mags they make lowers that take fail mags and DPMS uppers
DPMS has more out there and easier to get so parts are more abundant just incase SHTF
LMT, RockRiver and others make good ARs but ar10 parts are not interchangeable like ar15s
RR bought the rights to their 10 from somebody???bushmaster maybe???? who had problems with them but RR claims they worked the kinks out
Go with DPMS unless you want to spend big $$ on a LMT

Ummm...... No.

RRA designed the rifle to start with, but didn't put it into production at the time of its development. The sold the rights to B'master for a time and B'master made them for a relatively brief period. After the invasion of Iraq, B'master became so overwhelmed with orders from Special Ops and private security contractors that they had to drop the production of the rifle because they had so much else to do. This was noted on B'master's site at the time.

B'master never reintroduced the line as far as I'm aware and RRA began producing it themselves about 3 or 4 years ago.

If they have "problems" as you claim, it's awfully funny that, 1) the prices on them have only gone up since their introduction, 2) they're rather hard to find - so they must be being bought up at a fairly rapid clip, and 3) there are very, very few for sale used, so folks must be hanging onto them for some reason........even in spite of their so-called "fail" magazines.

Sounds a lot like a dealer who sells DPMS w/ their over-priced proprietary mags and not RRA with their "better mousetrap" thinking in using a commonly available, relatively cheap magazine.

Bitter much?

I am not a dealer wish I was I would have a lot more stuff to enjoy.

$20 for a new mag isn't bad in my book

Funny how rra didn't bring it back out untill the Obama run up. So who is the real profiteer.
so you are telling me you can buy an rra +5 mags cheaper than a dpms with 5 mags?
Why design a 1k+ gun around a $5 mag. especially when most malfunctions are caused by bad mags.
I built my own DPMs based ar10 with a lilja barrel.
If you need you ar to say rra to be cool when you go to the range go ahead.
I like proven reliability and dpms has it. They use the org. ar-10 which the ar-15 is designed off of.

I'm partial to my mega machine 308. I wouldn't personally buy a DPMS 308. The Armalite 308's use proprietary mags. Depending on how much you want to spend, here is what I would buy:

Larue 762
POF
LMT
LWRC
Mega Machine (and build it yourself!)
